A New Summer Experience at AUC

The youth and special studies division of the School of Continuing Education is offering its annual Youth Summer Program at AUC New Cairo providing children with a new experience during their summer time. Held under the theme Discover and Explore, the program gives children the chance to act out a play, learn about life’s most valuable lessons, improve their artistic talents and, last but not least, play sports and have fun. Distinguished Faculty Recognized at Spring 2010 Commencements

Continuing its tradition to reward and motivate distinguished faculty for their extraordinary research, AUC recognized several faculty members both at the graduate and undergraduate commencement for their commitment and dedication to AUC. At the graduate commencement, Amal Esawi, mechanical engineering professor, received the Excellence in Research and Creative Endeavors Award, which recognizes the contributions of full-time faculty to scholarship, research and the academic life of the university. At the undergraduate commencement, physics Professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, Amr Shaarawi, and music Professor John Baboukis received the Excellence in Service Award; management Professor Ahmed Tolba received the Excellent Teacher of the Year Award; and Nagwa Kassabgi, English language instructor, received the Excellent Instructor of the Year Award. First Visually Impaired Student Graduates from AUC and Former President of Ireland Receives Honorary Degree

For the first time in its history, AUC presented the master’s degree in teaching English as a foreign language to a visually impaired student Salama Ali, whose speech at the graduate commencement earned a standing ovation. Meanwhile, at the undergraduate ceremony, Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary doctorate in recognition of her international political career and support of human rights. In her speech, Robinson urged the graduating class to work on human rights issues. “I am talking to you graduates on such issues because your future is before you,” she said. “I hope that you will carry my passion for the true values of human rights. If you care, you can change many circumstances; you can handle a problem of discrimination or injustice.” More»

Islamic Finance Roadshow Forecasts Industry Growth

When many countries expected a drop in the Islamic finance industry during the world economic crises, it proved otherwise, sustaining its success in the market. Given the future of this expanding area, AUC’s School of Business recently hosted the third annual Islamic Finance News (ISN) Roadshow. The daylong educational event, which travels to 17 countries, provided an opportunity for banking professionals, governmental bodies, insurance companies, lawyers, consultants and others to understand the role they play in the global growth of the industry. Fifteenth Annual Conference on Econometric Modeling for Africa

The School of Business is sponsoring the conference, which will explore advancement of economic theory in its relation to statistics and mathematics. Speakers include Nadia Makram Ebeid, former minister of environment; Paul Collier, director of the Centre for African Studies, Oxford University; Yacine Aït-Sahalia, director of the Bendheim Center for Finance, Princeton University; and Franco Peracchi, professor of econometrics, University of Tor Vergata. Exhibition, featuring the work of United Nations photojournalist John C. Tordai, provides a glimpse into the lives of children and women in Palestine. Tordai's photographs of Palestine have been published in two books, including Into the Promised Land and A People Called Palestine.
