About This Program
Special Initiatives is an Open Society Institute program that provides funding to groups and individuals on the local and international level to promote human rights and government accountability.

Right to Information
The OSI Right to Information Fund supports civil society groups that are working to promote the full implementation of laws that guarantee the public’s right to information and ensure access to government records.

Criminal Justice
The OSI Global Criminal Justice Fund seeks to strengthen civil society engagement in the protection of the rights of criminal defendants and in confronting the overuse of pretrial detention.

Disability Rights
The OSI Disability Rights Initiative seeks to address discrimination against people with disabilities and promote their inclusion in society by supporting a rights-based approach to disability.

LGBTI Rights
The OSI LGBTI Rights Initiative seeks to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity by empowering lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex communities to promote and defend their human rights.
