Update smooths out X's kinks, Froyo coming incredibly soon

Verizon's top-tier Android devices, the HTC DROID Incredible and newly launched Motorola DROID X, are both receiving OTA software updates. According to Boy Genius Report, the Incredible will be getting some much anticipated Android 2.2 Froyo love in the next few weeks, while the X's upgrade will merely smooth out some kinks in the handset.

Verizon began rolling out the minor upgrade to the X yesterday. According to the carrier, Version 1.13.604.MB810.Verizon.en.US/Baseband: BP_C01.09.04P includes the following:

+ Improved battery charging status indicator.
+ Smoother transition for camera and camcorder functions.
+ Redesign of weather widget icons.
+ Faster Exchange ActiveSync® email loading.
+ Streamlined organization of newly downloaded applications.
+ Organized favorite contacts by call count.
+ Updated Bluetooth® connection for enhanced video
sharing experience.
+ Coordinated date and time across phone displays.
+ Cleaner looking status bar for GPS symbol.
+ Improved sync capabilities for 3G Mobile Hotspot.
+ Faster Visual Voice Mail loading.
+ Take advantage of the enhanced, preloaded My Verizon application.
+ Preloaded Amazon Kindle® application lets you read Kindle books on
your AndroidTM phone, including thousands of free books.

As for the Incredible, BGR received a tip from an HTC e-mail that promised an upgrade including Froyo by "the end of the month/first part of August". Other upgrade highlights are 802.11n Wi-Fi support, 3G Mobile Hot Spot, a couple new HTC widgets, 720p video recording, and Skype.

Both handsets are available from Verizon Wireless for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a qualifying two-year service agreement. The devices are very similar in features and form factor, but the Droid X boasts a larger 4.3" screen that rivals Sprint's EVO 4G. According to Verizon's website, both devices are currently out of stock and will begin shipping again on August 3. Did someone say "component shortages"?

What about the rest of the Anroid phones? That's a bummer for all the other Android users...

Not the responsibility of the respective companies (Verizon/Motorola/HTC). Samsung, Sony Ericsson, .. need to prepare and push the update themselves.

HTC in particular made a commitment to upgrade all phones released in 2010 to at least 2.2 - if the Incredible is getting the upgrade in August, the Desire/Legend/Wildfire/.. are probably following suit soon.

For older phones there's always the custom rom option.

FYI to anyone interested - Skype mobile doesn't work over wifi on android. Verizon has made backdoor deals with Skype to make sure it doesn't happen. AT&T; for some reason did not make the same deals and it does work on the iPhone.

I have 0-1 bars of signal in my house, so the idea is to open Skype and use it over my wifi network. Can't do that with my Verizon android phone, no matter what operating system. In conclusion:

Sadly the droid x and probably every subsequent Motorola android phone has a encrypted bootloader with efuse which has yet to be cracked. If you're planning on using custom roms like cyanogen, I'd stick to HTC or samsung.

Looking at the incredible and X side by side I would have to say the X looks a lot better. I'm a little bummed because I have the incredible, but I do like it.

I was just looking at the picture closely, and I think I prefer the Incredible. The bigger screen of the X is great, but the design of the DInc looks better to me.

Were I to buy one today though, I would probably go with the X for the bigger screen. The DInc looks better, but I don't buy a phone for good looks.
