NSO has one of the largest student staffs on Georgetown's campus. Five student Coordinators spend the entire summer (as well as a large portion of their spring semester) planning and selecting the staff for NSO. The NSO Staff consists of 32 captains and 180 Orientation Advisors (OAs). Captains are the liaisons between the Coordinators and the OAs. In addition, Captains help keep the events running smoothly during NSO. The OAs are the first people that most new students will encounter at Georgetown. Each OA has a group of 10-12 new students that he or she guides through the orientation process. OAs are great resources for information and advice about life on the Hilltop.
You will receive an email from your Orientation Advisor in early August!
Meet the NSO Coordinators and Professional Staff:
Carolyn Arnold (COL '11) is a pre-med psychology major, proudly hailing from the land of cheese, brats and Packer football (Wisconsin). When not introducing new Hoyas to the Hilltop, Carolyn also enjoys volunteering with DanceDC, working for the student newspaper The Hoya, building houses with Habitat for Humanity and helping out on GU Hospital's pediatric floor. She also loves random dance parties, stupid comedies and caffeinated beverages. Carolyn is 5'11" but to answer your question, she does not play basketball; she is, however, a dedicated Georgetown basketball fan. After being abroad in Edinburgh, Carolyn is thrilled to be back and is ready to welcome new students to this great place. |
Kate Broderick is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service majoring in Science, Technology and International Affairs with a concentration in Biotechnology and Global Health. When she is not busy looking for a business card large enough to fit all that, she is exploring the city - not far from her hometown, Columbia, Maryland - and counting down the days until NSO. Kate enjoys giving campus tours for Georgetown through Blue and Gray, and has been actively supporting the malaria awareness project, Nothing But Nets. Out rebounding, at a mere 5'5", the guys of Georgetown's coed intramural basketball teams and taking jogs down to the memorials are some ways Kate enjoys procrastinating from school work. Kate believes you can never smile too much, that Disney movies are even better when you are older, that eating cereal out of the box is a way of life, and that Georgetown is the best home away from home. |
Christopher Dicks (SFS '11) is a Culture & Politics major, originally from the resplendent city of Worcester, nestled in the heart of central Massachusetts. When not living out his unending enthusiasm for NSO, Christopher can usually be found in Uncommon Grounds, brewing delicious beverages and occasionally nibbling on pastries. He also spends several hours every week at Hoya Kids Learning Center, a preschool and child development center tucked behind Poulton Hall. For the past four years, he has rode in the annual Pan-Mass Challenge (a fundraiser for the Dana-Farber Institute). Since coming to Georgetown, he has become both a bhangra enthusiast and an avid fan of all things a capella. His other passions include baked goods, Tibetan Buddhism, naps, bookstores, life lessons from his grandma, spontaneous dance parties... and politics (like any good Georgetown student). |
Chris Scribner (COL '10) is an English major from New York City who transferred to Georgetown in the fall of 2008 from Augsburg College in Minnesota. Aside from being consistently awestruck by his NSO peers, he spends much of his time with his teammates on the Georgetown Lightweight Crew team, who are perennially in pursuit of the elusive national championship. He also works as a tutor in the Georgetown Writing Center (2nd floor of Lauinger). In his free time, he enjoys watching contact sports, alpine mountaineering, and reading about different paths of spirituality. After he graduates in the fall of 2010, he will continue rowing for the Hoyas while pursuing a graduate degree on the Hill and further postponing his entrance to the real world. |
Hijab Shah (SFS '11) was born in Birmingham, England, grew up in Peshawar, Pakistan, went to an international high school in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and somehow ended up in Georgetown, studying Culture and Politics. Known to her friends as "The Hot Mess," Hijab can be seen running in a state of frenzy from class to club meetings and back -- her Georgetown career has seen her as an editor with Hoya Sports, on the board of directors of the International Relations Club, staffing and debating at Model UN conferences, acting on stage with the South Asian theatre ensemble "Awaaz," and of course, NSOing with her favorite people in the world. |
