More than 600 friends and family gathered to see 31 undergraduates become the second graduating class at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service campus in Doha, Qatar (SFS-Qatar), on May 8.
President John J. DeGioia delivered this year’s address at the ceremony, which took place in Doha's Grand Hyatt Ballroom, where Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and several members of the Qatari royal family and senior Qatari delegates were in attendance.
“Commencement is a beginning, a stepping forward into a world that desperately needs your skills, your dreams, your passions. We are hopeful for the work you will do … and the lives you will touch, for the promise each of you brings into our world,” DeGioia said.
He encouraged the graduates to think about helping others after leaving Georgetown.
“You move forward from here today with the recognition of the responsibility we share for the collective development of the whole human family,” he said.
The SFS-Qatar Class of 2010 represents 11 nationalities, with students from Egypt, India, Iran, Lebanon, Mauritania, Palestine, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Qatar and the United States. Twenty-three students received degrees in international politics while eight received degrees in culture and politics. More than a quarter of the graduates studied abroad in Scotland, Paris, the United Kingdom or the United States.
“As dean, it gives me particular pride and pleasure to witness and to help recognize our students’ achievements. I wish them endless success in a bright and very promising future,” said Dr. Mehran Kamrava, interim dean of SFS-Qatar.
