On March 18, 2010 McAlister Place was dedicated as a beautifully landscaped pedestrian way. Features include the walkway, the Entry Plaza at Freret, the Stage at McAlister Auditorium, new lighting and lush beds of native plantings.

The Tulane University Uptown Campus was recognized in 2009 as a Tree Campus USA for its commitment to environmental stewardship and the wide variety of beautiful and well-managed campus trees. A tree planting event sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation was held on November 6, 2009, when 45 new trees of diverse native species were planted by students and staff in campus areas of high student activity. There are approximately 750 trees in the campus collection. Tulane will vie annually for the Tree Campus USA distinction by maintaining its arboreal efforts.

The Lavin-Bernick Center was awarded the American Institute of Architects 2009 Honor Award for Excellence in Architectural Design. The LBC was also chosen by the AIA as one of the top 10 green buildings in the country. MSNBC calls the LBC "[An] outstanding example of sustainable design."

The PJ's Coffee Shop at Stern Hall received a national design award from the AIA in the 2008: Small Projects Award Program, one of only 18 selected from around the country.

McAlister Place Project

Design Team: Wayne Troyer Architects with Towers|Golde Landscape Architects

Master Plan: Mossop + Michaels, Towers|Golde Landscape Architects, IMS Engineers, and LAM Partners Inc.

The McAlister Place Project is part of a long-term, campus beautification project that will eventually unite the quads between McAlister Auditorium and Newcomb Hall, transforming them into a beautiful and vibrant pedestrian environment with limited traffic and parking in the areas flanking the green space.

The transformation of McAlister Place is funded through the generosity of a university donor. Work was centered on the closing of McAlister Drive between Freret Street and Drill Road, as the area was changed from a through street and parking area to a beautiful pedestrian landscape that provides a lovely and safer place for walking and cycling through the Tulane campus. Construction began on Monday, May 18 with a major campus drainage improvement project, and is now open to pedestrian traffic.
