Abstract: A separate catalogue/database of articles in periodicals are made available to Users for more comprehensive search and retrieval, to solve the difficulties faced by the users during search in the Internet and downloading the selected records. A methodology developed towards cataloguing of articles available in periodicals and to cover the entire journals collection of both current journals and back volumes for any year in the Library. The downloaded materials from PUBMED collection are sent to WINISIS package, after different stages such as separate programme, FANGORN etc. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/328 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Database by definition refers to organized collection of data stored at a Central place. Appreciable technical advancements have taken place in the field of Data organization, Metadata and indexing for faster and accurate access to the information. However for applications where connectivity to the centralized database cannot be ensured and has requirement of access to specific set of the database, then the approach proposed by us in this paper can be quite useful. This paper discusses approach for information extraction and tailoring of information as per user requirements – Database Personalization. This paper also addresses the issues of database security and Intellectual Property Rights involved in creation of CDROM Databases. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/348 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This article deals with concept and scope of Local Area Network (LAN) , Intranet and their applications in the area of Online Database Services in any modern automated library system, with specific reference to the current status of online database services, presently in operation, at Central Library , I.I.T. Kharagpur. In the introduction, authors present a short description of the ongoing trends in information management field with special attention to the need of the day for network based online library services to overcome the age old barriers of geographical distance and time . Further to this, authors present an outline of the existing strong and secure computer network infrastructure available at IIT kharagpur, which has created a favourable condition for switching over to large scale online library services from the conventional stand alone mode of services. They also present a simple but useful description of ‘Slingshot‘, the interfacing software, and its application to put some of the CD – ROM databases into online services through LAN/ Intranet. Abstract: With the ongoing process of globalization and spurt in knowledge activities, the demand for information has been steadily growing in all the spheres of economy. The information systems and services that provide speed and convenience will survive and thrive as such systems and services will be preferred by users in a growing competitive world. The paper also discuses the impact of ICT on libraries and user communities besides talking about the electronic information services scenario and the challenges facing information users. Continuous developments in ICT have facilitated real-time access to global information, though paradoxically problems related to deluge of information and uninhibited access to information for user communities have also emerged. This paper highlights the Indian scenario and reports two kinds of user studies conducted by the author pertaining to the conventional information usage settings and electronic information environment. These studies depict that information usage in India in both these environments is generally tardy and points out the reasons for the same. The study reflects the fact that information collection also depends on the initiative of users. Presents two cases where information users have put in a herculean effort to collect information and maintain the same in the form of personal information files. The conclusion focuses on the considerable work and effort needed in the country for imparting literacy, computer literacy and information literacy for preparing and powering the masses for the construction of a knowledge based society. Abstract: There are numerous challenges in organising a digital library (DL) and successfully get to the user the articles he/she wants. Some of the problems have already been addressed and a few more are yet to be solved. Various standards have already been developed in storage and retrieval of digital data which are described here. They range from the standards that cover Portable Document Format files through the standards that govern international cataloguing efforts to standards for searching. Others are still under development and are described in the state in which they are currently. In conclusion, standards are necessary for every aspect of the digital library. New standards are being developed by the formal international and national standards bodies and one set up especially for the purpose such as COUNTER has been highlighted. Abstract: Today Digital Technology (computers and communication technology) is enabling information to be created, manipulated, disseminated, located and stored with increasing ease over the traditional one. On the other side Technological Obsolescence is the result of evolution of technology: as newer technology appears, older ones ceased to be used. Consequently, information, which relies on obsolete technology, becomes inaccessible. And preserving access to this (digital) information poses a significant challenge to the Library and Information Community. The present study highlights the digital preservation techniques and issues involved with it. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1356 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Data transmitted through a network may be protected from unauthorized receivers by applying techniques based on cryptography. Only people who possess the appropriate private key can decrypt the received data using a public algorithm implemented either in hardware or in software. Fast implementation of encryption-decryption algorithms is highly desirable. Data-content manipulation can be performed for various legal or illegal purposes (compression, noise removal or malicious data modification). The modified product is not authentic with respect to the original one. The technology of multimedia services grows rapidly, and distributed access to such ser-vices through computer networks is a matter of urgency. However, network access does not protect the copyright of digital products that can be reproduced and used illegally. An efficient way to solve this problem is to use watermarks. A watermark is a secret code described by a digital signal carrying information about the copyright property of the product. The watermark is embedded in the digital data such that it is perceptually not visible. The copyright holder is the only person who can show the existence of his own watermark and to prove the origin of the product Reproduction of digital products is easy and inexpensive. In a network environment, like the Web, retransmission of copies all throughout the world is easy. The problem of protecting the intellectual property of digital products has been treated in the last few years with the introduction of the notion of watermarks. Abstract: With the advent of Information Technology and its application in Libraries, concept of document management has been drastically changed to information management and again with the proliferation of information world wide coupled with internet, the entire scenario of information management has started its change to knowledge management, which is a recent origin term. Knowledge Management has become a new research area in comparison to other research areas such as data processing, information management, and network management. The innermost assignment of a library is to accumulate, systematize, preserve, and endow with access to knowledge and information. In fulfilling this gigantic mission, libraries preserve a valuable record of culture that can be passed down to succeeding generations. Libraries are an essential link in this communication between past, present, and future. Whether the cultural record is contained in books or in electronic formats, libraries ensure that the record is preserved, managed and made available for wide range of its usability. Abstract: The whole chain of e-book publishing is changing as the distinction between author, publisher, reader or user and library are being hazy. In this context there are many issues that need to be addressed, developments that are admirable and emerging trends that need to be understood. These include tracing the development from print to e-book; various publishing models for ebooks; various distribution models for e-books, emerging and genuine document formats and file formats used in e-book; new file sharing technologies; authoring and reading e-book; policies and legislation; fighting with piracy and concept of fair use; e-book business models; growth and impact of the e-book market in both developed and developing countries and the latest e-book trends and future technologies. In addition to this changed context, librarians are facing several other challenges in providing information, which are discussed in this paper. Abstract: Reports a study of 52 doctoral theses in Marine Geology submitted to Andhra University during the period 1954-2009. A total of 9,453 citations were analysed for identifying their bibliographic form, authorship pattern, ranking of cited journals and subject wise distributions of citations. The finding reveals that nearly 71.27% citations were from journals and 13.51% from books. The subject wise distribution of theses reveals that sedimentology, Geology, Marine Geology, Oceanography, Geochemistry and General Science and forms 73.16% more than half of the total theses submitted during the period. USA, India and UK are contributes 7875 (83.77%) citations. The authorship patter study reveals that the highest number of journal citations from multi authors nearly 73.7%.
