Not Exactly Familiar, But Not All That Different: Alabama 24, Arkansas 20
Talk about the events of the day at the Weekend Open Thread.
It's too early to tell if Arkansas is really 2010's answer to Ole Miss 2009, but Ryan Mallett certainly looked a lot like Jevan Snead did last year -- and that cost Arkansas a chance to upset Alabama and take the lead in the SEC West.
It might be too much to entirely blame Saturday's loss on Mallett -- we'll get to that in a moment -- but two of his three interceptions came on bad throws when Arkansas absolutely could not afford them. The first gave Alabama the ball on the Arkansas 12 and set up the Tide's winning touchdown; the second ended Arkansas' potential game-winning drive in Alabama territory with time winding down.
Not to take away from what Alabama accomplished Saturday -- at the half, the Tide was in the most danger of losing a game since the 2008 SEC Championship Game, but rallied for 17 unanswered points beginning late in the third quarter. Greg McElroy was uncharacteristically erratic, but Mark Ingram was back to being Mark Ingram, rushing for 157 yards and 2 TDs on 24 carries. (Trent Richardson gained 85 yards on eight carries.) Marcus Lattimore and Michael Dyer supporters should take note -- the next great SEC running back might still be the last great SEC running back.
But Alabama is far from winning the SEC West. The next two weeks still bring Florida to Tuscaloosa and send the Tide to Columbia, LSU and Auburn are still on the schedule, and the possibility that Mississippi State could be more dangerous this year than last is still alive. The Tide is about to find out just how much better than the rest of the league they really are.
That said, winning your first conference game -- and perhaps the most dangerous of the lot -- is the best way to start the season. Any Arkansas fan can tell you it's far better than the alternative.

I thought it was an excellent game....
No, we didn’t dominate like we would have liked to. But, this is another stepping stone for the defense and the offense. I was a little underwhelmed me McElroy’s play in the red zone but we got a win. We will learn from this and hope to make the neccessary adjustmemnts for Florida.
Sorry....
should have said " undewhelmed by".
You're comparing Mallett to Snead?
Really? After throwing 3 picks to #1 Alabama, who honestly looks better at this point than last year’s national championship team, you’re comparing ’10 Mallett to ’09 Snead? Really? Give me a break. Are you in the third grade at Oxford Elementary School?
+1
Mallet is light years ahead of Snead. A pretty stupid comparison. The short stuff kills him but he has a hell of a long ball.
don't think bama can handle Florida's secondary
if the Razorbacks can get 2 picks against them, Florida will get 5 picks. we still have the best secondary in college football even without Joe Haden

Lol....
Who needs to pass against you guys? You can’t even tackle. You crowded the box last year and still got steam rolled. Se ya Oct. 2
I'm not saying we are world beaters but....
pounding your chest on this blog after the year you have had so far doesnt exactly ring of the truth. Try snapping the ball consistently and then get back to me.
The year we have had?
4-0
Thats horrible!
You are lucky to escape Arkansas, Mallet gave the game away. They were winning and he still was trying to force balls in there like a damn freshman.

that's what you think
Mathew 19:26 "With God, all things are possible"
face it
you bama dorks are afraid of us, you know we have a better defense than people give us credit for and Saturday we prove it by stopping the run and forcing McElroy to throw 5 picks. Florida’s a trap game
Mathew 19:26 "With God, all things are possible"
Right.
We won’t even throw five passes against you guys because we won’t have to. We can run the wildcat up the gut every single play and amass 500 rushing yards against your overrated defense.

McElroy had an uncharacteristically bad game
Good luck trying to get him to throw 5 picks

Yea
Because he blew the game. Thats why he looked like Snead. Bama didnt pressure him or confuse him with crazy schemes. He just play ol’ sucked in the second half. He made horrible decisions that cost his team the game. He didnt even give his defense a chance.

Don't know what game you watched.
Because Alabama D showed up 2nd half is what happened. They quit making mistakes, they quit blowing coverage and so on.
Mallet was on his back a few times in the 2nd half, I didn’t know if he was gonna get up after one of the hits.
But I guess if you want to think a QB can go from 300 yards in the first half to throwing INT’s in the 2nd half all on their own for no good reason then be my guest. But you apparently seen a completely different game than I did.
Warning to everyone
Stop the name calling or I’m going to start issuing individual warnings.

In that vein
The one comment I deleted was the one that called another commenter stupid, etc. Call me stupid all you want.

Wasn't the worst that I've ever seen
Just wanted to stop things before they got out of hand. No worries.
