Natural disasters are endemic to West Bengal; excessive rainfall and flooding is frequent. Rising sea levels are also threatening the legendary Sundarbans delta, with the inhabitants of the islands at risk of becoming "climate refugees".

The Sundarbans lie at the southern tip of West Bengal, part of the world's largest delta. The area is home to unique mangrove forests, and the endangered royal bengal tiger.
