Blogs about: Mexico

Though the recent drug violence has taken a hit on Mexico’s public image, the country should not be judged on that alone — after all, it has a rich culture with a fascinating history and incredibly beautiful landscape (and the beaches aren’t bad, either). Oh, and the food. Need we mention the food? The tacos, enchiladas, burritos, margaritas, tequila…we could go on and on….

TAG on Fact: The Illegal Gun Trade
The Afghexican Gringo

95% of the guns accounted for in Mexico, among illegal drug-related crimes, are from the United States. A primary source is El Paso, Texas, the most heavily armed city in the United States, and also one of the safest. However recently in El Paso there has been concern about drug violence from Juarez spilling over the border. Ciudad Juarez is the most murderous city in the world, and is directly across the border from El Paso, coincidentally enough. There have been several reports of shots fired in Juarez that end up in El Paso walls, and on El Paso streets. So far no one in El Paso has been reported shot by one of these strayed bullets, but there is still anxiety over what will happen next. The illegal gun trade and the illegal drug trade run hand in hand; guns are sent down through legal owners in the United States who are usually offered ridiculously large sums of cash for their weapons, and those guns (really big guns) are then used to arm the foot soldiers for the gangs. Shots are

Le changement climatique ? Je vais lui dire mes quatre vérités !...
Intrgalaktiklyon's Blog

I was almost killed when..... (true story)
Rosefirewalker's TeaGarden

I was almost killed when a Brahma bull escaped during a rodeo being held in Northern Arizona. My Tata (which means grandfather, in Spanish) sold trinkets, dishes, hats and toys to the Indians living on the reservations in Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico during their festivals and holiday celebrations. My dad would take us to go work with my Tata and one summer we found ourselves at a bull and bronco riding rodeo in a small town in Arizona. He’d park his van, full of toys, dishes, Confederate flags, cowboy hats, bandannas, bird calls, magic snakes and other paraphernalia, so that it made one wall of his stand, which he dubbed “Fun City”. We’d set up three long tables on the other three sides and start to put out the merchandise, with the old fashioned cash register sitting in the middle of the table facing the front of the stand. As soon as we arrived, the moms with their kids would start milling around checking out the new dishware while the kids would start begg

Person of the Week: Texas Governor Rick Perry

Why don’t you do all the things that are constitutionally directed, like defend our border?”… *“I saw people who were really scared for the first time in their lives that their government was so out of touch with them,…” … *Perry said that Representative John Boehner, a fellow Republican expected to be House majority leader in the new Congress, should push the idea of sending federal Medicaid grants to states without procedural

Sunset
Over the Fence

October 21, 2010 Thursday evening sky Packing up the tents and camping gear is a complex process, particularly when everything must be loaded onto the skiff including any extra people not paddling. Today we had two choices, paddle on the eastern side toward the mainland or down the Baja side. Everyone opts for the Baja side as it has many coves to explore plus it is four miles shorter. Tomorrow’s paddle will be on the eastern side as our campsite will be on a long sandy beach judged to be one of the best beaches in the world. I ride in the skiff—I think everyone is tired of my handicap but most particularly me! I fall again today—twice, once in the lady’s bathroom trying to balance myself—no handicap bars on the canvas screen! The rock was crumbly and I landed on a small pile of driftwood and hoped that there were no scorpions or biting things in that pile. The second time was getting off the boat-wet with spray—I swung one leg over the rail and then the second and promptly found mysel

Newsline: American Consulate warns of carjackings
Diplomatic Briefing

A wave of American citizens getting carjacked south of the border in San Fernando has prompted officials to issue a new travel warning. The American Consulate in Matamoros recently issued a warden’s message after several reports of highway carjackings in central Tamaulipas. According to the warning, numerous American citziens have reported getting carjacked on the highway between Ciudad Victoria and San Fernando. Others have been carjacked on the highways from Reynosa and Matamoros going to San Fernando in and around the communities of San German, La Loma and Santa Teresa. San Fernando is located about an hour south of Matamoros and has been witness to intense drug cartel violence as well as the massacre of  72 Central and South American immigrants. The warning said there is no pattern to the carjackings. They have taken place at different days of the weeks and different times. Old and new cars with American and Mexican license plates have all been stolen. Most victims reported t
