CHECKLIST OF MILESTONES FOR 2009 ELECTIONS
The United States supports credible, peaceful, nationwide elections in Sudan in 2009, as a key milestone of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and as a way to achieve democratic transformation in Sudan. Per the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, elections are scheduled to take place on six levels: for the presidencies of the Government of National Unity (GNU) and the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS); for the National Assembly and the South Sudan Legislative Assembly; and for the governorships and state legislatures in all 25 states.
- Appointment of National Electoral Commission -- Per the CPA, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) is to be created within one month after the adoption of the national elections law. The President is to select between seven and nine impartial representatives to serve on the NEC; the First vice-President will approve the names. These members are responsible for organizing elections and for liaising with the international donor community. The appointments have been completed as of November 17, 2008.

Anniversary of Comprehensive Peace Agreement Implementation
(Jan. 9): The United States congratulates the parties on the progress made in implementing the CPA over the last four years, including creation of a Government of National Unity, establishment of a wealth-sharing program between North and South Sudan, and completion of the national census. (Oct. 21): The United States expresses its deep concern for the well-being of nine Chinese and Sudanese workers reportedly kidnapped on October 18 in South Kordofan State. The parties responsible for the kidnapping must release the workers immediately and without harm. Full Text
U.S. Department of State Partners with Sudanese Integrated Mine Action Service
(Oct. 14): The Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM/WRA) recently awarded a $200,200 grant to the Sudanese Integrated Mine Action Service (SIMAS) for humanitarian mine action and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) training in Southern Sudan.
