As in previous years, on Remebrance Day, the British Embassy in Tripoli organised the Memorial Service in the cemeteries of Tripoli, Benghazi and Tobrouk in remembrance of the soldiers who were killed on Libyan Arab soil during World War II.
The Anglican Pastor, Abuna Hamdy, conducted the service at the British Memorial Graveyard at Hammangi Tripoli (suok et talatha). Other church leaders from different Christian denominations, together with an Imam from the Da'awat al Islamiyat joined in prayer, while H.G the Metropolitan Greek Orthodox Bishop Theofylaktos together with his priest offered a prayer from Greek Orthodox liturgy.
Ambassadors from different countries were among those invited to commemorate their nationals buried in the cemetery, and students from the British school in Libya sang hymns during the service.
At the end of the ceremony poppy wreaths were laid at the foot of the Monument that dominates the centre of the green yard. This is covered with white slabs engraved with the names of the soldiers who died defending freedom. It is a reminder for all to strive for Peace. |
