Doha, November 8, 2010 – The sixth prime-time episode of the second season of Pan-Arab reality-TV show “Stars of Science”, an initiative of Qatar Foundation for Education Science and Community Development, brought on again highly suspenseful moments to the viewers.
In the framework of the “Engineering” challenge, the 10 candidates still competing had been given the task to manufacture a complete prototype of their innovative project. As a new feature of this season, each of them was supported by a “Project Partner”, chosen by themselves among their friends, family members and acquaintances.
Upon the most heated showdown with the jury to date, in which the hopefuls had to demonstrate the full functionality of their prototypes, only 6 candidates made it through, according to the following ranking:
1. Sadek Qassim, Kuwait Partner: Ahmed Kholousy - Egypt Project: Automated multi-functional lab tester for oil samples
2. Abdullah Abou Zeid, Egypt Partner: Ayman Alsayed – Egypt Project: Co-inventors of a robotic rotational joint with 2-degrees of freedom
3. Ahmad Al Ghazi, KSA Partner: Mojahed Alkhateeb – KSA Project: Motorized walker and lifter for the elderly and handicapped
4. Anis Al Sobhi, Oman Partner: Omar Ghanem – Palestine Project: Motorized shopping trolley and lifter for elderly and disabled users
5.Maha Al Amro, KSA Partner: Eyad Alahmar - Syria Project: Portable air conditioning vest for field workers
6.Hind Hobeika, Lebanon Partner: Nadim Antakli - Lebanon Project: Swimming goggles measuring a swimmer’s heart rate with real time alert
At this occasion, the two permanent jurors, Dr. Fouad Mrad (Lebanon), Coordinator at United Nation’s ESCWA Technology Center, and Mr. Rashed Ibrahim (Qatar), Head of the Qatar Scientific Club, were joined by special guest Dr. Sonia Aissa (Tunisia), Professor at King Abdallah University of Science and Technology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Dr. Ahmed Shehab ( Egypt), Assistant Professor at Texas A&M; University at Qatar. Dr Aissa notably expressed her encouragement of Qatar Foundation’s initiative to promote education throughout the region, thus granting students and eager individuals the opportunity to develop their ideas.
In the next prime-time episode, upon the “Design” stage and to be broadcast on Sunday, November 14, the 6 remaining candidates will face the jury after having completed the aesthetic and functional design of their projects.
The daily shows, from Monday to Saturday, will grant the TV viewers a window into the lives of the 6 candidates and their partners as they continue the development of their projects, while offering attractive reports about science in an entertaining way.
