El Muni (Spain/Equatorial Guinea) cooperation with afrol News materialises

Oslo, 14 March 2005 - Today, for the first time, afrol News redistributes an article from the Valencia-based Equatoguinean newspaper El Muni, the only media from that country to be both independent and to operate by professional journalistic standards.

The Oslo-based news agency afrol News today was happy to welcome El Muni in its growing network of independent African media, which is based on free news copy exchange and coordinated marketing efforts.

The editors of El Muni and afrol News met in Madrid (Spain) in November last year to discuss a possible cooperation. As El Muni still is an irregular publication, seeking investors, it has not been possible to materialise the cooperation agreed upon in Madrid until today. While El Muni currently does not appear in a paper edition, afrol News meanwhile will distribute the newspaper's copy digitally.

El Muni is the only media from Equatorial Guinea to be truly independent, as newspapers and broadcasters in the country are owned by the state, ruling party, family members of the dictator or practise strong self-censorship. Exiled Equatoguinean media, on the other hand, generally do not operate by journalistic professionalism and ethics, with the exception of El Muni.

El Muni is founded and owned by Pedro Nolasco. Mr Nolasco is considered Equatorial Guinea's most prominent journalist and has been fighting for press freedom in the country for over a decade. The forced dissolution of the press association, of which he was the elected leader, and attacks on his person obliged him to flee to Spain, where he now publishes El Muni.
