He is an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Performing Arts (Music). He formally came to academe later than most having spent a good part of his early adulthood as a community and progressive organizer. He has also been a longshoreman and a rigger in his hometown of Newport News, Virginia and a house painter and construction worker in Washington, DC.
