One Year After Sectarian Attacks on Baha’is in Shuraniya: No Accountability for Inciters or Assailants; No Justice for Displaced Baha’i Families

One year after the criminal attacks on Egyptian Baha’is in the village of Shuraniya in Sohag, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) expressed its disappointment at the Public Prosecutor’s failure to bring the assailants and those who incited the attacks to justice. For one full year, state authorities have yet to bring justice to the victims of the attacks or enable Baha’is forcibly removed from their homes to return.

Limiting State-Funded Treatment to Six Illnesses Threatens Patients’ Lives...Minister’s Office and Specialized Medical Councils: We Know Nothing About this Decree

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights warned today that the lives of patients receiving treatment at state expense were under threat after the state-owned al-Ahram reported yesterday, 29 March, that the Minister of Health had issued a decree to limit state-funded treatment to six illnesses: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high-blood pressure, renal failure, and Hepatitis C patients receiving interferon.

EIPR Researcher Wins AUC Gender Studies Award

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) is proud to announce that EIPR researcher Noha Roushdy has received the annual award of the American University in Cairo (AUC) for best graduate dissertation in gender studies. Noha received the Magda El-Noweihy Graduate Student Award in Gender Studies at an award ceremony hosted by AUC on 16 March.

EIPR Welcomes Withdrawal of Flawed Health Insurance Bill, and Asks Minister of Health to Submit a New Bill to the Public to Remedy the Failure of the Latest Bill

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights today welcomed the government’s withdrawal of its flawed health insurance bill and its decision to postpone submission of the bill to the next parliamentary session. The bill aims to provide universal insurance coverage but does so in name only, without achieving real, and just universal coverage.

Letter from EIPR to al-Gabali: Ministry Workshop Promotes Confusion between Generic and Counterfeit Drugs... Workshop Recommendations Suggest Less Costly Drugs are Counterfeited

In a letter sent today to Minister of Health Hatem al-Gabali, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) warned against the danger of recommendations adopted by a workshop on pharmaceuticals in Egypt. The workshop, held by the Ministry of Health’s National Training Center in February, was titled “He Who Sees Fraud and Remains Silent Is an Accomplice.”

UN Human Rights Council: 47 Human Rights Organisations Urge States to Reject Draft Resolutions which Threaten to Undermine Freedom of Expression

Forty seven international, regional and national civil society organisations – including ARTICLE 19, the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights – have written to Member States of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) expressing their opposition to draft resolutions on “combating defamation of religions” and on complementary standards to the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Fourteen Egyptian human rights groups today expressed their full support of the statement issued by the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights which condemned the Egyptian security forces for killing up to 60 migrants on the Egyptian side of the borders with Israeli since mid 2007.
