MediaCorp launches Style: Men, ARENA to be closed

Singapore, 30 April 2009 – MediaCorp announced today that it is launching Style: Men – presently a successful supplement on women’s title, Style: into a full-fledge magazine and closing the Singapore edition of men’s title ARENA.

The news on ARENA’s closure comes as no surprise after the announcement in March this year that Bauer Media was pulling the plug on the ARENA UK mothership after 22 years of operation.

Says Managing Director of MediaCorp’s publishing division, Ms Zita Ong, “MediaCorp was ready to continue publishing ARENA Singapore despite Bauer’s news two months ago but with further evaluation, it has become evident that without the content resource of the international editions, maintaining a local one has its limitations.”

MediaCorp, however remains committed to the men’s magazine market and has wasted no time in filling the gap left by ARENA with another men’s title - Style: Men.

Style: Men was launched in 2004 as a monthly supplement to MediaCorp’s flagship fashion title Style: and is highly regarded today by both industry insiders and readers as a fashion and grooming authority for men.

Says Ms Ong, “Style: Men is one of our most successful brand extensions and I believe it will now be even more successful as a standalone magazine. It fits perfectly into our lifestyle publishing arm which already includes two of Singapore’s top fashion magazines for women, Style: and Elle. Together, these magazines will reach out to a large, targeted readership of both men and women, all of whom are motivated by fashion beauty and style.”

Style: Men is slated to be launched as a monthly title in the last quarter of the year and is aimed at the Singaporean man who embraces fashion and grooming and who is increasingly style savvy. Says Lifestyle Group Editor, Corinne Ng, “As the male magazine consumer gets more sophisticated, he’s going to eschew generalist titles in favour of more specialist ones that will give him the targeted information he wants.”

She adds, “Style: Men will be the magazine a man will reach for when he wants to find out which jacket best suits him or how to pull off patent dress shoes or where to tailor a great white shirt. This magazine will be purely dedicated to fashion, style and grooming, and the Singaporean man is more than ready for it.”

This move is part of MediaCorp’s continuing efforts to stay ahead of the competition. Last month’s revamp of Chinese entertainment magazine i-Weekly saw sell-out situations at the newsstands, while the company’s other consumer titles, namely 8 DAYS, STYLE, STYLE Weddings, ELLE, FHM, Manja and Mother & Baby, continue to dominate their respective spaces. MediaCorp’s licensing and distribution business remains strong while its contract publishing division continues to buck the global economic trend with double-digit growth year on year. Also bucking the trend is STYLE Weddings which held its annual Glamour Bash event over the weekend which saw a turnout of almost 800 people – one of the best turnouts this year for a wedding show.
