About the BBC

The real story

Here we provide the facts about some of the BBC stories that you may have read about in the news. We’ll use these pages to correct misconceptions about the BBC and give more information about some of the issues that are receiving attention and comment from others.

BBC staffing at events and outside broadcasts

Glastonbury Pyramid Stage

Part of our remit is to bring people together for shared experiences. Whether for major sporting occasions, music festivals, national occasions, or important news events, people expect us to provide distinctive coverage that they can trust.

The very nature of these events is that they are not broadcast from a BBC studio, but can happen anywhere in the UK or indeed the world.

We are sometimes criticised for the number of people we send to cover events. Here we publish information about how we staff important events.

BBC North and the move to Media City, Salford

Our move to MediaCityUK in Salford Quays is regularly scrutinised in the media. BBC North is one of the most ambitious projects in our history and will create a new centre of excellence outside London for production, technology development, training and digital media. The move starts in May 2011 and the project is on time and on budget. Read more about why we are moving and what it will cost

BBC licence fee settlement

The Government and the BBC have reached an agreement over the future funding of the BBC. The licence fee will remain at its current level (£145.50) until the end of the Charter in 2016/17. Read the details

BBC executive and talent pay

We recognise the need for greater restraint in executive pay, reflecting the financial constraints facing the rest of the media industry, the public sector and licence fee payers in general. We are also reducing our overheads so that we can spend more on programming. Read about changes to our executive and talent pay
