Is Glendale the Tailgating Capital of the U.S.?

Wednesday December 1, 2010

Start preparing to be discovered -- as one of the best tailgaters in the country. The Bing National Tailgating Championship will be at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on December 5, 2010. This is your opportunity to showcase your grilling talents, have a party and support the Arizona Cardinals. Joe Cahn, the world's only professional tailgater, has driven over 800,000 miles, visited all 31 pro football stadiums and over 120 colleges, and seen thousands of fans and over 650 games checking out tailgating parties. This weekend he wants to see how Arizona fans do it.

The Championship consists of six regional competitions on game day at pro football stadiums around the country including Houston, Denver, New York, Phoenix, New Orleans and Seattle. The winning team from each regional competition will earn the chance to compete for the national championship in Dallas during the biggest week in football in February. Judging will take place in 4 categories: Cooking, Tailgate Spirit and Environment, Parking Lot Agility (bean bag and football toss), and Team/Sport Knowledge (trivia). To apply for the competition, sign up at the Tailgating Institute of America website.

Monday November 29, 2010
Looking for ideas for unique holiday gifts that allow you to support local Phoenix area businesses this season? Here are five ideas.

  1. I Cactus Phx Tee Shirt
Holy Piñata is a young company run by two guys who love Phoenix. They invite you to officially proclaim your love for the capital by proudly sporting one of their shirts. I bought one, and I get comments on it every time I wear it! After you receive your order, you may designate that $2 of your purchase be sent to local-based charities. I got the black tee, but it comes in white, too. Sizes for men, women and youth. My order came in just a few days, but it's that busy time of year, so if you want one by Christmas....
  2. Thrive Time for Teens
This is a board game where teens start in high school and have part time jobs. They will be faced with money and life decisions like buying cars, managing expenses, giving back to their community, paying for college, using credit cards, buying stocks and starting businesses. The winner is the teen that not only generates income and makes positive financial decisions, but also effectively manages their time and does good for those around them. Pay Your Family First, LLC sells the game. It is a Scottsdale company dedicated to educating youth and their families through innovative and easy-to-understand programs that are applicable to real-world situations. It's about financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Sharon Lechter is the founder of of the company. She is an author and financial literacy advocate.
  3. Give a Peach Tree
Know a person or a family who doesn't have room in their apartment for one more thing? Here's the perfect gift! Schnepf Farms allows people to lease a peach tree for next year's peach growing season. All trees are organic using no pesticides or fertilizers of any kind. The tree is assigned tree in the person's name. They receive a map of the orchard letting them know when the tree is pruned, free admissions to the Peach Festival in May, and notification when fruit is almost ripe for picking. In a typical year 150-200 pounds of fruit per tree are picked -- more in a good year. Since this gift doesn't bear fruit for several months, you might have to create a gift certificate to present this holiday gift.
  4. Mixology 101 Class
At Sanctuary on Camelback Jason Asher mixes drinks. As a matter of fact, he was named the nation's most inspired bartender by Bombay Sapphire & GQ Magazine in a competition of more than more than 3,500 competitors who were evaluated on appearance, style, taste, aroma, accessibility, creativity and product knowledge. Your gift recipient enjoy a fun-filled lesson from Jason himself during an interactive cocktail experience held at jade bar every Sunday. For reservations, call 480-948-2100.
  5. WWE Monday Night RAW
If someone you know like to watch people smack each other around (in a good way?) then a couple of tickets to this event might be just what you were looking for as a gift for that person who has everything. It takes place on January 3, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix.
