Nets OT winner at 3:08 against pesky Finns, who earn a point

BUFFALO – Team USA started their defence of the World U20 Championship title with a win, but they needed overtime against Finland. Nick Bjugstad scored the winner 3:08 into OT for a 3-2 win.

BUFFALO – Canada withstood a determined Russian effort by scoring the only three goals of the third period of a 6-3 win in the opening game of the 2011 U20 for both teams.

NIAGARA – Last year’s bronze-medal winner Sweden had a smooth start into the 2011 IIHF World U20 Championship, winning the opening game at Dwyer Arena 7-1 against newly-promoted Norway.
Four-goal first period takes Switzerland to victory
BUFFALO – Switzerland got goals from four players in the first 14 minutes of the opening period and hung on for a 4-3 win over Germany to begin the 2011 IIHF World U20 Championship.
BUFFALO – Team Canada arrived in Buffalo with a clear mission. After the U.S. defeated them in the gold medal game last year, the Canadians want to win the World U20s on American soil.
World Junior city Buffalo reminisces “craziest game ever”
Those who saw the game will never forget it: Buffalo vs. Krylia Sovietov 12-6 in 1976. Scores like that are probably less likely 35 years later when the city hosts the IIHF World U20 Championship.
