Bahrain Economic Quarterly

The Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) began publication of the Bahrain Economic Quarterly (BEQ) in December 2009. The BEQ will regularly assess the Bahrain economy, provide the latest data about its economic direction, and also carry special articles analysing aspects of Bahrain's economic experience.

The EDB has created BEQ to inform and stimulate a wider debate on key economic issues facing Bahrain.

Bahrain Economic Quarterly Q4 2010

This quarterly reviews Bahrain's economic performance as the global economy. Albeit modest, the global pickup is likely to support Bahrain’s prosperity in 2011, with rapid growth in major developing countries underpinning demand and prices for oil, refined petroleum, aluminium and chemicals. We expect output growth of a little over 4% for Bahrain in 2010, and again in 2011.

Highlights of the BEQ Q4 2010

• The first article outlines a new economic growth strategy. The rate of growth of government spending has sharply slowed, and the finance and construction sectors are making a smaller contribution to GDP growth. At the same time the Bahraini workforce is expected to expand quite quickly, and the rate of growth of the low-wage foreign workforce to substantially slow. All these changes, and others, are being recognised in Bahrain’s new economic growth strategy.

• The second article utilises a detailed data set to generate workforce projections, with the ultimate goal of inferring training requirements. The analysis predicts growth in Bahraini workforce of 29% from 2010 to 2020.
