In his second major staffing announcement of the week, President Obama on Friday said he's tapping another former Clinton administration official to head his National Economic Council.

Former Clinton economic adviser Gene Sperling, currently an aide to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, will replace Lawrence Summers, another Clinton White House alumnus who left the post in December to return to a teaching post at Harvard.

Mr. Obama delivered the news at Thompson Creek Manufacturing in Landover, Md., where he also addressed a new government report that showed national unemployment fell slightly to 9.4 percent in December.

"We know these numbers can bounce around from month to month, but the trend is clear," he said. "We saw 12 straight months of private-sector job growth. That's the first time that's been true since 2006."

In addition to Mr. Sperling, Mr. Obama announced three other appointments -- Jason Furman as deputy director of the NEC, Katharine G. Abraham to the Council of Economic Advisers and Heather Higginbottom as deputy director at the Office of Management and Budget.

The personnel moves are part of an ongoing staff shakeup at the White House as it prepares to deal with resurgent Republicans in Congress and with Mr. Obama's own approaching re-election bid. On Thursday, the president tapped banking executive William Daley, former secretary of commerce under President Clinton, to serve as his new chief of staff. Earlier in the week, longtime spokesman Robert Gibbs announced he plans to step down in early February to become an outside adviser to Mr. Obama.

No replacement for Mr. Gibbs has been named.

For a man who was bringing change to the Potomac, "our leader" just keeps shuffling cards in the same old deck. Sperling started with Robert Rubin, Clinton Tres, Sec. Talked wth Obama then worked on Hillary's campaign'' then on to Timmy G. In 2008 he earned a cool mil. flapping his lips, including $887,000+ {Bloomberg} from (oh no,them again) Goldman Sachs. Boy you talk about "Fat Cats" in the Administration? How about all the Progressives at the WALL St. trough!
Don't you think it is time for some dilligent "journalist" if not Congress, takes a serious look at the incestuous connection between the Democrats and Goldman Sachs. I sure think, like the SDS/ Weathermen wormed their way into the Edu. system. the rats have invaded the Wall St. grainery. There is no cigar smoking Big Biz people at Goldman Sachs, just greedy Progressives who mean to amass power & wealth for themselves & will pay the devil incarnate CinC, for the gain and to Hell with the little people!
Hillary came in second; but now her team is in place? In case there is a banana peel on the oval office floor?.. Here she comes to the rescue! OR was Barry picked to fill in, as it wasn't time for Madam Pres. and the boys & girls will pillage while waiting. It is time that America demands: that HARD questions be asked and complete answers... backed up by records, be given. Glib Gibb-isms are no longer satisfying to the taxpayers as they should never had been to the WH press corps. America is tired of the "shuck" & wants transparency from top to bottom in Washington.

Unemployment hasn't fallen at all. When DC stops cooking the books and adds in the underemployed and those that have just given up looking the true number in my area is about 18%. It must be nice to have the media as your lapdog
