Boston Declares Snow Emergency

Tuesday January 11, 2011

The city of Boston has declared a snow emergency effective at 9 this evening with the threat of a winter storm looming.

A powerful nor'easter is expected to dump as much as 16 inches of snow in the Boston area beginning early tomorrow morning. According to the National Weather Service, the snow will begin around 2 a.m. and will last throughout the day on Wednesday, potentially crippling the morning commute.

The storm comes on the heels of the blizzard that impacted holiday travelers in the area just over two weeks ago. The city of Boston has over 500 pieces of snow-removal equipment nearly 25,000 tons of salt ready to fight the impact the storm will have on area roadways. Boston Public Schools have already been closed for Wednesday. In addition, a parking ban will go into effect tonight at 9, and all city trash collections this week will be delayed by a day. Click here for complete information on city snow emergencies.

And as long as you're not headed into work (ahem), might as well hit the slopes, right? The roads may be treacherous though, so here are some of the closest ski areas to Boston, which should limit the headache of driving through the storm.

Bourdain Streams His Afternoon in Southie on Facebook

Wednesday January 5, 2011

Anthony Bourdain Boston

Popular author, chef, and TV host Anthony Bourdain is in Boston this week shooting an episode for his Travel Channel show, "No Reservations," and spent Wednesday trolling around South Boston, streaming his afternoon over Facebook.

Bourdain and the "No Reservations" crew conducted a Q&A session with their audience shortly after 12:30 this afternoon while at lunch. Then, following a short break, they made their way to Murphy's Law, a Southie bar, to shoot a segment for the show.

It was an intriguing look behind the scenes of the show, which promises to deliver the Travel Channel audience an honest look at Boston's food and drink culture, as Bourdain's show does everywhere it travels, tending to always stay away from mainstream "tourist traps." No word if the webcasts will be rebroadcast, so check the "No Reservations" Facebook page for information, as well as for any future announcement about when the episode will air.
