Memphis City Schools Information

Wednesday July 6, 2011

It's almost that time again. Can you believe it? Before you know it, the kiddos will be back in school. This time of year also brings in a flurry of emails from readers who have a lot of questions about Memphis City Schools. What time does school start? How do I apply for free lunches for my child? Where is the school bus stop in my neighborhood?

We've put together all of that information and more for your convenience. Check out our Memphis City Schools information and let me know if you have any other back-to-school questions. For additional information and for other school districts, be sure to check out our Back-To-School Guide.

RIP Officer Warren

Tuesday July 5, 2011

While most of us were enjoying 4th of July festivities this weekend, one Memphis police officer lost his life in the line of duty. In case you spent the weekend under the proverbial rock, Officer Timothy Warren was shot and killed on Sunday at the Double Tree Hotel downtown. He was responding to a shooting report at the hotel. The gunman originally shot and killed his wife's ex-husband and, while trying to escape, went on to shoot Officer Warren.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Officer Warren's death is the first in-the-line-of-duty death in Memphis since 2004.

Officer Warren leaves behind a wife and two young children.

Have a Great (and Safe) July 4th Weekend!

Friday July 1, 2011

The 4th of July weekend is upon us and for many, that means three days off of work to kick back, relax, and enjoy the festivities. If your Independence Day plans are going to include alcohol, please be careful out there and do not drive if you've been drinking. Not only is it dangerous, but there are significant legal consequences, as well. If you do find yourself unable to drive, please call a cab.

Of course, I am well aware that many folks have to work over the weekend and my hat is off to them. Without these dedicated folks, the rest of us wouldn't be able to shop, dine, get medical care, or do countless other things that we so easily take for granted.

But so, whether you are working or relaxing, I hope you have a great holiday weekend!

New Ways To Save on Gas

Wednesday June 29, 2011

If you are travelling this three day weekend, gas prices are probably at the forefront of your mind. And while prices aren't as high as they have been, they are still not cheap. With that in mind, have you heard about the new fuel policy at Kroger? In the past, you could use your accumulated Kroger points to save 10 cents per gallon at Kroger gas stations. Now, however, you can save up to $1.00 per gallon depending upon the number of points you have. Personally, I'll probably never have enough points (1,000) to save that much but I did save a much appreciated 40 cents per gallon the other day. I'll take it.

Also, Walmart is now offering a 10 cent per gallon discount if you use a Walmart gift card, money card, or credit card. This offer is only good through the end of September.

To find more cheap gas in the Memphis area, be sure to check out our cheap gas guide.
