The Marine Corps and Army each have been ordered to draw down tens of thousands of troops as part of Defense Department budget cuts, with as many as 20,000 Marines to be sliced, according to a Marine Corps Times article.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the drawdowns Thursday as part of numerous planned "efficiencies" designed to cut the Defense Department budget in coming years. The drawdowns will not begin until at least fiscal 2015, he said.
The Navy proposes reassigning 6,000 sailors to sea, eliminating various staffs including that of one carrier strike group, and disbanding the Norfolk, Va.-based 2nd Fleet, according to defense officials, according to a Navy Times story.
The changes mean the end of the Navy's lean manning experiment and enact some recommendations of the Balisle fleet review panel, which found in February that years of crew reduction and cost-cutting initiatives had degraded the surface fleet.
President Obama has signed into law a package of changes -- mostly improvements -- in the Post-9/11 GI Bill, according to an Air Force Times article.
Signed Tuesday, the law attempts to simplify the complicated process for paying what remains the most generous education benefit for veterans since World War II. It still promises full tuition, plus a living stipend and book allowance, for fulltime students taking undergraduate courses at four-year public colleges and universities. For many students, it also covers the full tuition and fees for graduate studies and for attending private colleges.
