The EPA awarded a Science to Achieve Results (STAR) dissertation fellowship to Eileen Hlavka, a fourth year doctoral candidate at PRGS. The fellowship will be used to support her dissertation research which uses Bayesian text analysis to measure research on renewable energy technology and assesses whether that research is driven by energy policies.

Sean O'Neill, a PRGS Ph.D. candidate currently working on his dissertation in health care quality improvement, was asked by Reuters Health to comment on a study in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The JAMA study indicated that for-profit hospices are choosing cheaper patients in order to make more money from their Medicare reimbursements, and cited a paper O'Neill wrote in 2008 with Karl Lorenz (RAND/VA/UCLA) and Susan Ettner (UCLA).
Pardee RAND Graduate School Alum Authored Only Analysis of California's Redevelopment Program — Jan. 30, 2011
Governor Jerry Brown's first budget entails a plan to abolish California's redevelopment agencies in order to reclaim their share of the state's annual $5 billion in property taxes. The only review of the value of these agencies in their 65 years of existence was completed by 1994 PRGS alum Michael Dardia.
Pardee RAND Graduate School and Southwestern Law School to Offer Public Policy and Law Certificate Programs — Dec. 16, 2010
Beginning in the fall of 2011, qualified students from PRGS can take courses in law at Southwestern Law School leading to a Certificate in Legal Studies. Qualified students from Southwestern can take courses at PRGS leading to a Certificate in Public Policy. The non-degree programs are intended to provide students with a basic knowledge of law and public policy, and an understanding of the tools and frameworks relevant to each field.

African First Ladies Meet Former U.S. First Lady Laura Bush and Discuss PRGS Fellowship — Sept. 22, 2010
The first ladies of three African nations—Lesotho, Namibia, and Sierra Leone—met with former U.S. First Lady Laura Bush on the sidelines of the sixth annual Clinton Global Initiative forum. They discussed various efforts to support the work of the African first ladies, including a new RAND Corporation African First Ladies Fellowship that aims to help first ladies and their staff develop skills for managing an effective first lady's office and learn practical policy-analysis techniques.
Pardee RAND Graduate School 2010 Commencement — Jun. 17, 2010
On June 12, 2010, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, gave the commencement address, culminating the 40th anniversary celebration of the Pardee RAND Graduate School. During his address, Mullen congratulated the graduates, encouraging them to use their education to lead the changes of the future. A total of 33 doctoral degrees and 30 master's degrees were awarded during the ceremony, which was attended by more than 300 people.
