Clashes in Ivory Coast's commercial capital on Tuesday killed at least five people during the political impasse about who will lead the country.

Witnesses say violence broke out in the city of Abidjan between security forces loyal to incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo and supporters of Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognized winner of a presidential poll in November.

The clashes took place in a pro-Ouattara neighborhood called Abobo, where a militant youth group that backs the incumbent president had planned to meet on Tuesday.

Mr. Gbagbo, who continues to control the military, refuses to give up power despite intense international pressure to do so.

Mr. Ouattara remains holed up in an Abidjan hotel protected by U.N. peacekeepers.

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga is expected to return to Ivory Coast this week in an effort to mediate an end to the impasse. Mr. Odinga serves as the African Union's mediator in the country.

Separately, the U.N. refugee agency says 25,000 Ivorians have fled to Liberia because they fear the political crisis will lead to widespread violence.

The stategy being pursued by au and ecowas in the ivory coast crisis betrays or exposes a massive influence by the western powers. Really we have compromised our independence as african states. Our leaders must rethink. What moral right has mr Odinga to speak on issues about ivory coast?

The situation in ivory coast is becoming unbearable. The AU,UN,ECOWAS, sud try and make effort to oust Gbagbo out of office. There should be solution to this probs. We don't war in ivory coast

President Gbagbo won’t step aside because he is the certified winner of the presidential election.By law, the disputed election was sent to the Constitutional Commission where the seven member panel Could you imagine Al Gore holding his own swearing-in ceremony? That’s what Ouatarra did without the approval of the Constitutional Council as required by Ivorian Law

Situation like this makes doubt the sincerity of the west, whenever there is conflict in Africa, this matter would have been resolved but for the overbearing influence of the International community. Why is it that nobody is willing to listen to what Gbagbo camp is saying? Why is it that the vote recount he called for has not been heeded? Does he not deserve a chance to be shown how he lost or ortherwise.

AMBASSADOR BAMBA, GBAGBO WILL WANT TO STAY ON AS PRESIDENT IF PRESIDENT OUATTARRA'S SUPPORTERS WANT ALL THE KEY CABINET POSITIONS INCUDING THE POSITION OF PRIME MINISTER, HE WILL NEVER GIVE UP THE PRESIDENCY WITHOUT THE USE OF MILITARY FORCE. IF YOUR PRECONDITION FOR A POLITICAL DEAL OUT OF THE CRISIS IS GBAGBO'S DEPARTURE THEN I AM AFFRAID YOUR JESTURE IS A BITE PREMATURE AND GBAGBO COULD MISINTERPRET THIS.

What the AU ECOWAS the UN and whoever they are fronting should know is that even if they manage to put Ouattara in the presidential palace he cannot rule in Abidjan nor in Yamousokro. His best bet will be to set up camp in Khorogho in the north

11-01-2011 winsor (Haiti)

hold on to your seat, there's more fight ahead. the ivorian coast system is weak, because for a president of country to stay that longer in office (power) without the people approved, that tells (you) something. Mr. Gbagbo must go. Palm Beach State College

What is the confusion in the Ivory Coast about? POWER! The entire West Africa and the World should by now be convinced that the Ivorian Election was telegarded.Let the true African christians and/or Ivorians draw line between the two, GBABO & OUATTARA. What we forsee is a religious war not civil as the entire world perceived. It is our Prayer that the GOD of Jacob, Abraham,Moses will guide & protect that country and its people.

I think Europe is causing more problems to what already exists. I think the best way ahead is either to recount the votes or conduct another electiobn altogether. Europe cannot remove Gbagbo who is backed by the constitutional commission of his country. The African Union should be independent too.Any African country's change of position in this matter reflects external influence. They should take their decision, stand by it and execute it. God bless Africa!!!

I have stated it in this Column earlier in December 2010 that the only way to bring a lasting peace to ivory coast is to dislodge President Laurent Gbagbo and arrest all his supporters by ECOMOG forces to be led by Nigeria. For Ghana to have pulled out from being part of using Legitimate force by ECOWAS which is in the offin,is nothing but an act of cowardice and diplomatic misdirection. We can not open our eyes and allow one man to distabiles West African Region for us.(+2348035797921)

Africans are power drunk, gbagbo can't quit until he is forced out.he did not deserve any right for fair hearing since he do not want to respect the law of the land,it is long overdue for Au. & Eu to use force and eject him out of office.even if he won,he should have respected the law of the land by handing over power & pursue his grieviances in the law court.he is heartless that even when hundreds of people are dying just for his sake.he refused to change his mind.may God have mercy on him.

ECOWAS. It is absolutily critical to remove mr. GBAGBO. to leave the power. This it would be a good timing in AFRICA.

It baffles me when people say the west is interfering in Africa. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know the west has nothing to do with what is going on in IC. The notion that someone is more Ivorian than another is scary. Gbagbo will not cede power peacefully; and I am not for military intervention either. This is not a stalemate; let the international community continue to tighten the economic grip on Gbagbo, when the solders can no longer feed their families, they will get him out.

11-01-2011 AAR (USA)

Another tragedy on the African continent.........Now even Ivory Coast has fallen into the same trap as Sierra Leone and Liberia and other African nations.......with the global economic crisis in full swing.....don't expect an end to this madness.......other African nations are certain to follow these bad examples in the future.

11-01-2011 Lugard (Nigeria)

Both men, if they love the country, ought to show the willingness to dialogue for the good of their country. If not, then the people should chase both men out of the country. Neither has any birthright to the nation's presidency. The country belongs to the Ivorian people not to Gbagbo or Quattara. Too bad that the military that ought to provide needed security at times like this stupidly and blindly follow the dictator.

12-01-2011 sierra leonean in usa

THE DRUMS OF WAR ARE STILL BEATING THOSE WHO THINK MILITARY INTERVENTION IS THE SOLUTION ARE DREAMING. I AM APPEALING TO SIERRA LEONE GUINEA AND LIBERIA TO STAY OUT OF THESE THREE COUNTRIES MAY BE RISKING AN OTHER WAR IF THEY ATTEPT SENDING TROOPS TO THE IVORY COAST

12-01-2011 John (USA)

It is very critical for EOWAS and AU to remove Gbagbo and do it immediately. Faillure to do so means that no African leader will feel the need for to ever concede electoral defeat.

12-01-2011 PAUL K. L (CANADA)

Glenn Gbakoyah. What is scarying? Are you saying it is not true that someone can be more of a citizen in a country then another? By the way which country are you from? If my guess is right, you are a Liberian. However, it is not of any important to know where you are from. Please let me educate you on citizenship of few countries. In the united States, only those that are borned there has the right to be president. It's the same in Canada.

12-01-2011 James Apana (Ghana)

Gbagbo must be removed to deter other African leaders from doing same.

12-01-2011 BAGARUKAYO ABDUL (UGANDA)

Its tyme up for incumbent president Bgabgo to step down.He has no future plans for this country. it has been a slogan for all africas presidents to rigg elections.

12-01-2011 Bokelo Ballah (Ghana)

when the rebel almost overran yamosokoro n abidjan, n Gbabo led gov't invited the international community into IC, there was no mentioned of foreign intervention or meddling into IC internal affair. But when Gbabo lost the election, certified by the very international community, we are now hearing of international meddling in the internal affairs of IC. This rally cries are emblematic of a DICTATOR try to con it citizens. the true is Gbabo is just power drunk n afraid of his own shadow.

12-01-2011 JOHN (NIGERIA)

PLEASE NIGERIA GOV SHULD COME AND FACE HOME WE HAVE PROBLEM IN JOS NORTHING SO FAR HAS BEEN DON AND WE ARE HERE THINKING OF TROOPS TO TAKE TO IVORY COAST GBAGBO WILL NOT STEP DAWN

12-01-2011 Phuti (South Africa.)

Africans, just when you think we are improving, we go backwards. We are a laughing stock of the world. All I hear is poeple blaming the West. Let us stop blaming the west and take account of our actions. This President for life trend in Africa must stop. I sickening to hear Africans blaming the west for every mess up we do.

12-01-2011 jacob awuni akambonaba (ghana)

gbagbo is wicker man so he much go and leave ivory coast he need to be force out office un, au and ecowas do some thing now before it too late

12-01-2011 George Everett (Liberia)

Why the media does not consider the supporters of Ouatara as the rebels that are fighting Gbagbo's Security forces? Where are they getting their guns from if they were mere civilians? I also watch the names of those woh say Gbagbo should go; they are mostly muslims. Let us watch out.

12-01-2011 Edwin Kaliku, PhD. (USA / NIGERIA)

In 2005 when Gbagbo invited the UN. No medling. When Gbagbo signed an agreement in Pretoria for the United Nations to assist monitor the election and an election committee was approved by Gbagbo, no one objetced. Gbagbo lost and he brought in constitutional Court to over rule the election. Now we cry fatuous, interfearance and recount. When Atiku looses election in April, please cry for recount. Ivorians & Africans wake up and embrace change.

Paul K.L my friend, you’re right about my citizenship. The issue is not about becoming president; it is about accepting your fellow countrymen and being tolerant of them. I know Canada is a very tolerant country and that’s why you are sleeping sound at night. Why can’t that be the same with IC? Unless leaders like Gbagbo stop preaching the politics of hate the country will remain divided. Anyway, he’s on his way out; I pray blessings on the people of IC.

The story of Ivory Coast reminds me of the story of King Solomon, when two women claimed to be the mother of a child. King Solomon said take a sword and cut the child in half, and give each woman half. The true mother of the child said no, she would rather give up the child than see him split in two. Gbagbo does not care that his country is cut into pieces, or that people are being murdered.

13-01-2011 Seyeh Dulleh (Australia)

I am concern the situation in IC will affect the peace in Liberia as the diide in IC is a reflection of the fashional structure that battled each other in Liberia. May God bless the region.

13-01-2011 PAUL K L (CANADA)

Glenn my brother let's be realistic. president Gbagbo did not start the war in the Ivory Coast he also was not the one who disqualified ouattara. the Ivorian problem is so complecated I don't it's fair to blame it on one person. to be frank, you and know even if ouattara is president the still wouldn't br peace. you can see that the division already there. By the way, are from the kpelle tribe?
