    Lawmakers Discuss Security Issues

    The House of Representatives called up a resolution today to honor the six people killed as well as those injured in the shooting rampage in Tucson, Arizona.  The resolution honors Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) who remains in critical condition following the massacre and will also recognize acts of heroism by first responders on the scene.  It is expected to be passed by unanimous consent.

    Speaker Boehner (R-OH)  spoke first on the resolution followed by remarks by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other House leaders.  Members resumed remarks follwing a recess for a prayer service held earlier this afternoon.

    At a medical update today, University Medical Center's Trauma Chief Dr. Peter Rhee said Giffords' condition is proceeding "as anticipated." He added that doctors have decreased sedation and she is becoming "more spontaneous all the time.” More »

    Haiti: One Year Later

    On the one-year anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti, Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern discussed the role the emergency response organization has played over the past year in aid to the victims.

    McGovern, head of the nation's largest humanitarian group, addressed the National Press Club with a speech entitled "One Year after the Haiti Earthquake: Progress and Challenges," in which she deals with questions related to post-earthquake issues such as the cholera contamination, the proliferation of tent cities and the country's troubled election.   • Census Director Releases Redistricting Schedule

    Last month. the U.S. Census  Bureau unveiled the first official population numbers for the 2010 census.  The  population of the United States rose 9.7% percent since the 2000 census. Today, the Census Director talked about some of the methodologies used in this census and how they compare to the 2000 census.     Homelessness in the U.S. Report

    The National Alliance to End Homelessness released its State of Homelessness in America report that found the nation’s homeless population increased by approximately 3 percent from 2008 to 2009 and cited the recession as contributing factor to the increase.  The report also showed California, Florida, and Nevada have the highest rates of homelessness. Speakers included the group’s president Nan Roman and Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), who is a senior Democrat on the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. The event took place at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

    South Carolina Governor's Inauguration Ceremony

    South Carolina made history when the state inaugurated its first female and minority governor. Nikki Haley (R) was sworn in as the Governor of the Palmetto State on the steps of the State House in Columbia, South Carolina. Since the founding of the United States, 85 men have served as South Carolina's governor. Haley will be the first woman. And at 38 years old, she is the nation’s youngest sitting chief executive. Outgoing Governor Mark Sanford attended the Inauguration ceremony. Nikki Haley represented Lexington County in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2010.

    Treasury Sec. Tim Geithner Remarks on U.S.-China Economic Relations

    Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner spoke at John Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Study in Washington, DC. His remarks focused on the U.S. and China’s economic future and what to expect from Chinese President Hu Jintao’s upocming state visit.

    British House of Commons Prime Minister's Questions

    The British House of Commons returned to session after their winter break. At the beginning of Prime Minister’s Question Time, Prime Minister David Cameron offered condolences to the Australian Prime Minister after the destruction caused by recent record breaking floods there. He also responded to questions about bonuses and tax cuts given to bankers, the lack of government transparency regarding those bonuses, continued reform of the National Health Service, fair regulation of the media, and preparations for the upcoming royal wedding.

    Indiana State of the State

    Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels (R) delivered the annual State of the State Address at the Indiana General Assembly in Indianapolis.  Governor Daniels began his first four-year term as Indiana’s 49th governor in 2005.  He was elected to his second term in November, 2008.

    New Jersey State of the State Address

    New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) delivered the annual State of the State Address in Trenton.  The Republican governor, in his first State of the State speech since taking office a year ago, told lawmakers he won’t raise taxes in his next budget, wants to start debate on his plan to fix the state’s underfunded pension system, and plans to focus on education reform in the coming year.  Governor Christie was elected in November, 2009 and was the first Republican to win Statewide Election in New Jersey in 12 years.

    Brookings Institution Discussion on Haiti After the Earthquake

    The Brookings Institution hosted a discussion on the earthquake in Haiti.  Activists who recently traveled there gave an assessment of the current situation, and also their insights on the remaining problems that are hindering reconstruction efforts. Topics of discussion include humanitarian aid concerns, rubble removal efforts, disease response as well as sexual violence and sanitation concerns in Haitian camps.  Among the speakers was actor and humanitarian Sean Penn who currently heads a group devoted to providing relief to Haiti.
