Wednesday's What You May Have Missed

Wednesday October 20, 2010

Because sometimes it's impossible to keep up with it all, each Wednesday I showcase three unique planner promotions you may have missed. This week, we head to Nashville, Vegas and Denver.

Nashville Will Sing for Meetings

Nashville is offering a promotion that will fill music-lovin' planners with glee. The inventive "Nashville for a Song" promotion offers venue discounts, comp nights and service specials. The best inclusion, however, gives qualifying meetings the best seat in the house to a private and complimentary music performance just for them.

Click here for details. Meetings must take place by December 31, 2011.

Mandalay Bay Beach

In Las Vegas, Mandalay Bay is inviting planners to "fire" up their next event with an intimate beachside BBQ. Groups of 10 to 30 can reserve the tropical Mandalay Bay Beach all to themselves. Starting at $15,000, the package includes a BBQ dinner with open bar, a cigar hostess, flip flops for attendees and beachside fun n' games ranging from volleyball to massages. Call (702) 632-7470 for more information.

Four Seasons Denver

One day old, Four Seasons Denver is the chic new kid on the block in Colorado. A "Perfect 10" meeting package provides planners with a way to experience this luxe new Rocky Mountain experience, at a savings.

The promotion applies 10 percent of consumed room revenue towards one of the following: the master account, a charity donation, a DMC or transportation company, or a future meeting at Four Seasons Denver or Four Seasons Vail. An additional 10-percent savings is available for welcome receptions, meeting room rentals, spa services, A/V needs, upgraded linen and floral arrangements or in-room guest amenities.

You'll need to act fast to take advantage of this offer. Bookings must be made by the end of the month and the event held by the end of the year. For more info, click here or call (303) 389-3000.

Marriott hotels worldwide are Thai-ng to set a world record for the largest Thai dinner party.

Tomorrow, October 20, the hotel chain will dish up delectable servings of such tasty Thai offerings as Tom Yum Goong (lemongrass soup) and Pad Thai Noodles in attempt to break devour the current world record. But, a company press release states an even bigger goal behind the event.

"Thai cuisine has gained worldwide popularity in recent years," said Dominic Sherry, regional vice president, sales and marketing for Marriott International Asia Pacific. "In an effort to restore Thailand's position as a major tourist destination, we are reaching out to customers everywhere with what they love most about Thailand - its food."

Day 3, Part 2: Blogworld Expo

Saturday October 16, 2010
BlogWorld Badge

After a fantastic start to the morning of the third (and final) day of Blogworld Expo, I choose my second session for the day after much deliberation.

Slipping into "Getting Noticed: Building Your PR Plan," I found myself in a small room that quickly became packed. Unfortunately, two of the panelists weren't among us, arriving late to the party. It wasn't until about 20 minutes into the one-hour session that things officially got underway. I soon realized the topic was geared more to food bloggers so I gave up my seat to one of the many people standing in the back and swiftly made my exit.

After consulting my schedule, I chose "Hyper-Analytics of Social Media" as my final session. Not listed in the official program, it was in a separate print-out that I happened to snag on the walk in. While it didn't provide any actionable tips (besides the plug for the soon-to-launch and intriguing-sounding research.ly), it was very successful in getting attendees to think about reach, far beyond actual numbers.

Here are some fascinating points:

  • Counting isn't enough anymore. Don't look at statistics as a component, but as a lifetime value.
  • Panelist prediction: Users will get more value out of Twitter than newspapers in two years time.
  • It's not always about numbers. Small, targeted outreach can produce huge results.
  • Use of geo- and time-targeting are increasing as marketing tools.
  • World is condensing to 3-4 degrees of separation.

As the session drew to a close, I realized that Blogworld Expo (when not examined by individual parts but viewed on its whole) is a fantastic experience for three simple reasons - it provides attendees with an energizing boost in enthusiasm, serves as a reminder that they are not alone, and reinforces their resolve (and dream) to be the best they can be.

Day 3: Blogworld Expo

Blogworld Expo is marking its third and final day in Las Vegas today. After a day of mixed experiences yesterday, I headed over to host hotel Mandalay Bay this morning a bit apprehensive, but mostly hopeful.

I started the day with the morning's keynote address "7 Harsh Realities of Blogging for Bucks." I arrived a few minutes late (drat my Starbucks addiction!) so I missed reality no. 1, but did get the remaining six. (If someone knows the first one, please leave it under the comments!)

Here is the session, hosted by Darren Rowse, Brian Clark and Sonia Simone, in a paraphrased nutshell and in many of their own words. The presentation was insightful, amusing and energizing - a perfect start to the day.

Harsh Reality #2- "Push button net cash machine on the fritz." The days of easy money made online are over. The real focus should be on building content that is real and that matters.

Harsh Reality #3- "You are not scalable." Get real about how many connections you can make and still have a life.

Harsh Reality #4- "No one actually wants that much authenticity." Too many bloggers are sharing too many details. Have boundaries. Don't get too personal or be too boring.

Harsh Reality #5- "Social media hates selling. (And yet you have to sell.)" What other people have to say about you is more important than what you say. Be remarkable, but do it through your content.

Harsh Reality #6- "A blog is not a business." If you want it to be a business, you need to treat it as a business. Think about what your audience wants.

Harsh Reality #7- "No one is reading your blog." The biggest reason people aren't reading your blog is that you are not talking about what people want to hear. You don't need a zillion people, you just need a focused group. There are two routes to this end, be entertaining or be useful. If you have to choose, be useful but try to be both.

My recap of the second part of the day at Blogworld Expo 2010 is coming up.

Don't forget you can watch the closing Blogworld keynote address live on the web beginning in just under an hour at 5 p.m. PST. "New Media Live!" will be presented in a talk show format and will feature comedian and host Adam Carolla, Penn Jillette of magic team Penn & Teller, and Cali Lewis, host of GeekBeat.tv, among others.
