A Goodbye

Monday January 31, 2011

Love Park

I have a bittersweet announcement today, folks – this is my last day as About's Guide to Philadelphia. I recently accepted a job in California, and although I love Philadelphia fiercely, it's an opportunity I just can't pass up. (And I do have to admit, after all the recent snow, the prospect of few more days of sunshine a year seems pretty attractive.)

There is a lot I'll miss about this city. The people. The food. Packing into a bar with friends to watch the Phillies. Hiking through Wissahickon Valley Park. I could go on, but if I did, it would quickly become evident that it would be much more efficient to list the things I won't miss.

I've enjoyed sharing my favorite (and sometimes, least favorite) parts of Greater Philadelphia with you. And I leave you in the very capable hands of the next Guide, who will be along shortly.

All my best.

Best Coffee Beans in Philadelphia?

Monday January 24, 2011

I recently moved to West Philly, and I've been struck by the sheer density of coffee shops in my immediate area. Sure, I was certainly never lacking for coffee in Northern Liberties, but now it seems like no matter where I walk, I'll pass a completely full coffee shop every four blocks or so.

Most mornings, however, I make coffee at home. I just finished a cup made with some of my favorite beans from Old City Coffee (a cup of coffee that, I'll add, is extra-satisfying on this cold day when my apartment's heat is also on the fritz). While drinking that coffee, I started thinking about how many different coffee roasters there are in Philadelphia, from the ubiquitous La Colombe to the tiny, small-batch roasters scattered across the city.

Taste in coffee, like taste in music, is certainly subjective. That said, who do you think makes the best coffee beans in Philadelphia? Cast your vote in the poll below. And if I'm missing your favorite roaster, be sure to leave its name in the comments.
