The Daily Star is pleased to provide a forum for debate on a range of subjects, from local cultural activities to international politics.
Dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of letters fall into the editor’s mailbox daily. In order to keep the letters timely, The Daily Star generally produces a special letters section. When the influx of letters is particularly large, extra space is made available accordingly.
If you would like to submit a letter for publication, please remember to include your full name (first and last) and address, including city. The Daily Star typically only publishes letters under 400 words, and these are subject to editing. The Daily Star will not acknowledge unsolicited submissions.

“Israel’s wrong friends are even worse friends of the Jewish people”
January 13, 2011

The article is right on. You can see now in the United States that there is a growing number of people who are implying that Jews are responsible for the financial meltdown, that Jews control the banks and were bailed out by the Obama administration and that too many Jews surround the centers of power.
It’s dangerous because Jews are viewed both as a threat from the left and as a threat from their involvement in capitalism. The Israelis need to understand that these so-called friends are friends of convenience and when the usefulness of Israel ends – or when it becomes inconvenient – they will turn on a dime and blame the Jews once again for the ills that befall them. This love affair with Israel has nothing to do with Judaism and everything to do with the notion that the messiah Jesus Christ will return to the holy land.

“Uncertainty grips Lebanon”
January 13, 2011

When was the last time Lebanon gave the rest of the world some good news?

Armand Rius
Mexico City, Mexico

The political stability of Lebanon should be greater than the influence of any other party, whether Saudi or Syrian or Western. The trial of statesman Rafik Hariri’s assassins must go forward and the individuals suspected to be involved in the crime must be taken to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. The judges’ final decision should prevail.
Lebanese people must stand by each other hand-in-hand and adopt unity no matter what political party they support as the future of the country lies in their hands. If they succumb to divisions, the country will descend into turmoil with civil war on the horizon if they remain divided.
Let’s prioritize the interest of the Lebanese, forget the past and move forward by staying united, no matter what religion we follow and Lebanon shall stay strong and overcome any storm. If necessary we must change the leaders whom we see not fit to be leaders. Lebanon is made strong by its people and we shall stay strong when we stay united and justice is above us all.
May God save Lebanon and keep his people.

“This week’s grim Arab history lesson”
January 12, 2011

Yes, as a Jew, I find it incredible that the entire Arab world tries to blame so many of their problems on Israel. Using Israel as an example, the Arab countries could gain a lot by seeing what you can accomplish when you move forward with constructive progress instead of focusing all energies on the destruction of others.

“Feminist group reclaiming gender roles in Lebanon”
January 12, 2011

It’s very important to be a woman activist in the Middle East because until now, despite all the technological and social advances, most men still consider women inferior. It’s very important that women get help when they experience domestic violence and speak out loud to educate those who are afraid or ashamed of speaking.

“Israel draws fire from E.U., U.S. over demolition of Jerusalem hotel”
January 10, 2011

What are the United States and the European Union doing to halt the illegal and criminal actions of Israel? When will they make the Israelis stop ignoring their international obligations and failing to observe numerous United Nations resolutions? When Saddam Hussein ignored U.N. resolutions and international obligations, the U.S. quickly organized a so-called international military force and attacked and occupied Iraq. What is different about Israel? After all, the Israelis also have a nuclear capacity which was never allowed to be checked by the relevant U.N. committee. They also occupied land – in the same way that Iraq conquered Kuwait – and also are disregarding international opinion. No wonder extremism is developing. The U.S. is losing its influence and justice appears to be dictated by Zionist influence.

John Prendergast
“George Clooney and John Prendergast”
January 10, 2011

The fallacy of the nation state has been proven to be a flawed concept yet continues to be sought and in Sudan the emergence of a new nation will bring destruction in its wake. Any serious student of geopolitics has read Arnold Tornbee’s “Mankind and Mother Earth” and knows that in the 21st century the idea of the local sovereign state has failed over the past 5,000 years and that the national state is an economic anachronism in a world of global economic and technological unification. National segregation is the consequence when political unification of an overpopulated earth is ignored. We live in an interdependent world with a mandate to preserve, not destroy, Mother Earth. The technical potency of proliferating weapons as the defense mechanism of the nation state will assure continuous conflict.

Mikhail Gorbachev
“Russian society will rally behind a Medvedev democratic agenda”
January 6, 2011

As much as I respect Mr. Gorbachev, the arguments about Russian President Dmitri Medvedev representing a real democracy against the new elite or the Siloviki, well-patronized by Prime Minister Vladamir Putin are far too reminiscent of recurring themes in disinformation that we intelligence officers scented in the halcyon days of the Cold War. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev should be recognized for his courage and his commitment to the Russian people but he errs in his judgment of the situation in his homeland. The Rodina is challenged not only by tyrannical leaders who are faux democrats but by darker forces of fascism and the problem that none dare mention – fundamentalist Islamic terrorism. It is surely no coincidence that the current leadership in Moscow is Janus-faced.

“Survey: Arabs to form majority in historic Palestine after 2014”
December 31, 2010

Would it not be wonderful to have a genuine democratic multicultural Palestinian state where Arabs, Christians and Jews can live peacefully together and where a Jew can marry an Arab and vice versa?
Could this eventually lead to a unitary state? Is that what the Zionists are afraid of? But the Zionists will no doubt invent new provocations as they have done in Gaza, so as to continue their war against the Palestinians, ensure U.S. economic and military aid and the Western corporate media will no doubt comply.

“Hillary Clinton’s subtle change in tone should worry Israel”
December 29, 2010

Not only is the United States robbing the poor countries who can no longer sell their goods to the U.S., but they are robbing their own public, who can no longer buy cheap foreign products. The U.S. refuses to help the poor countries by buying their cheap products, insisting on protecting their own rich wages and industries.
It’s just plain greed and selfishness. If governments were to worry more about feeding their people or feeding the other poor and needy of the world instead of arming themselves or fighting their neighbors, then there wouldn’t see nearly so many undernourished people.

“WikiLeaks to publish sensitive Israel cables”
December 24, 2010

Sir, everybody interested in Middle East politics is asking why WikiLeaks has not yet published sensitive Israel cables. Many international papers like yours and Al-Ahram are looking for an answer.
One answer might be that the person behind WikiLeaks fears for his life.
