Haas atop leader board after second round at Torrey Pines

More News

Just five days after losing in a playoff for the Bob Hope Classic, Bill Haas grabbed a 2-shot lead Friday at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

Haas made eight birdies on the South Course for a 6-under 66, giving him a 2-shot lead over Anthony Kim.

Strong finishes by Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson made them feel better about their rounds and about their chances of catching Haas.

Mickelson was 3 shots behind, along with defending champion Ben Crane, four of Mickelson’s Ryder Cup teammates and John Daly.

Gary Woodland was 7 shots back at 140.

Woods, who has won his last five starts at Torrey Pines had a 69 and was 5 shots behind, but with only 11 players ahead of him.

Woods ran off four straight birdies early in his round and at one point was only 3 shots out of the lead.

But he twice took 2 shots to get out of bunkers and was as many as 8 shots behind until the final half-hour. He laced a 5-iron within 12 feet for birdie on the 16th, made a 20-foot par putt on the 17th, then hit a 5-wood from 248 yards over the water and onto the green on the par-5 18th, 2-putting for birdie.

“It was a round that easily could have slipped away,” Woods said.

For the first time since the 2009 Players Championship — before her breast cancer diagnosis became public — Amy Mickelson was on the sidelines.

“She just looks terrific,” Mickelson said. “After a year-and-a-half, we’re in such a better place.”

FOUR SHARE LEAD AT VOLVO CHAMPIONS:Miguel Angel Jimenez, Edoardo Molinari, Raphael Jacquelin and Peter Hanson were tied at 11-under going into today’s third round at the Royal Golf Club in Riffa, Bahrain.
