Football: Notre Dame to make push for Niklas

It's a big weekend for Anaheim Servite lineman Troy Niklas. He visits Notre Dame. He's down to Notre Dame and USC as possible college choices, according to OCVARSITY.com.

Niklas was The Times' lineman of the year. Stanford is out of the picture because he was not accepted despite a 3.7 GPA.

Anaheim Servite kicker Connor Loftus has committed to Pennsylvania. He's known for his outstanding leg and outstanding grades in the classroom.

Boys' basketball: Coaches beware of critical Twitter comments

A high school basketball coach in Kentucky has been reprimanded for critical comments about a referee he made on Twitter.

Jeffersontown Coach Jeff Morrow criticized an official's call on Twitter, and the Kentucky High School Athletic Assn. fined the basketball program $1,500, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Morrow also loses coaching box privileges for three games.

Football: View Park receives academic recognition

Forty-three football players from Los Angeles View Park Prep are scheduled to be honored by the Los Angeles City Council Friday morning for combining to have the highest grade-point average out of 72 teams in LAUSD.

View Park, which won the City Section Division III championship, had a 3.3 GPA.

Coach Robert Ambers said coaches hold mandatory study hall every other day. Players submit weekly progress reports and have to sit out half a game if they miss homework assignments.

Baseball: Campbell Hall catcher headed to LMU

North Hollywood Campbell Hall catcher Adam Ehrlich has committed to Loyola Marymount. He hit .450 last season as a junior.

Boys' basketball: Westchester is 8-0 in Western League

January 27, 2011 |  8:59 pm

Westchester stayed unbeaten in the Western League with a 58-46 win over Fairfax. The Comets are 19-5 overall and 8-0 in league play going into a showdown with L.A. University on Monday.

Laik Carter had 21 points for Fairfax.

Football: City vs. Southern Section all-star game on Saturday

The second annual Sports Scholarships USA City vs. Southern Section all-star football game will be held Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Lake Balboa Birmingham.

There's also a high school combine on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Birmingham.

Nike Extravaganza is looking strong

The Nike Extravaganza set for next Friday and Saturday at Santa Ana Mater Dei is filled with top boys' and girls' basketball teams.

On Saturday, Feb. 5, the top City Section boys' teams, Woodland  Hills Taft and Westchester, will get to show their stuff in back-to-back games. Westchester will face Orange Lutheran at 4 p.m. and Taft will play Concord De La Salle at 5:30 p.m. No word on whether De La Salle football Coach Bob Ladouceur will offer defensive suggestions.

The evening games should be fun. Mater Dei plays Los Angeles Price at 9 p.m. and the best game of the night matches unbeaten Long Beach Poly against Las Vegas Bishop Gorman at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Feb. 4, the girls' take center stage, with Mater Dei playing La Jolla Country Day at 9 p.m. and Brea facing Bishop Gorman at 7:30 p.m.

Football: Recruiting madness is about to end

Wednesday is letter of intent day for high school football seniors, and lots of cable stations and websites are putting together recruiting shows on which players will announce their college choices after showing a variety of hats and then picking their new school.

Foxsportswest.com has lined up Michael Eubank from Corona Centennial, Marqise Lee from Gardena Serra, Troy Niklas from Anaheim Servite and Torian White from Lakewood to announce their college decisions at noon on Feb. 2, barring any leaks.

The show will air at 7 p.m. the same night on Prime Ticket.

ESPNU and the CBS College Sports Network will have live signing shows on Wednesday, so buy your popcorn and enjoy the recruiting madness.
