Sam Quinones covers immigration, drug trafficking and gangs as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times.

Quinones is also the award winning author of two books: True Tales from another Mexico and Antonio's Gun & Delfino's Dream. The books are collections of nonfiction stories Quinones wrote while living and working as a freelance writer in Mexico.

Instead of writing stories about the official and bureaucratic Mexico we see on TV, Quinones focuses on "another Mexico," the regular people without influence on the fringes of Mexico's paternalistic political system. These are the independently minded people who dare to live their own lives, start businesses and risk everything to pursue their dreams in the US.

Reason.tv's Paul Feine sat down with Quinones to talk about popsicle kings, drag queens, cults, corruption, migration and the future of Mexico.

Approximately 13 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. Still photography by Sam Quinones.

Juarez is one of the most dangerous cities in the world, El Paso is one of the safest. Why?

Sam Quinones is a wonderfully well spoken journalist! He will be making a special appearance at Cerritos College in Norwalk on Thurs Nov 1, 2012 starting @ 6pm-8:30pm. My club --The Library Club-- is hosting this event. He will be conducting a presentation, guide us through a workshop he created, and do a book signing after the event. Free admission for Cerritos students and a whopping 1 dollar for non-students. There will be a concession stand and Quinones book will also be on sale.

@profwito undefined variables like 'good' or 'bad' are not effective ways of forming an argument or labeling something you approve or disprove of. What's good for one person is not good for another. I agree with you about shantytowns and regulations, too bad we're talking about a narco state... little in the way of regulations stand in the way of the black market, which rules Cuidad Juarez. Makes the regulations far more devastating to the populous trying to make an honest living.

What is the best way for Mexico to develop a more local governing mindset. Will they have to change a couple hundred years of centro-politics? It is really unfortunate what is going on in Juarez and N. Mexico.

"Egalitarianism, huh?" Compared to Mexico. In Mexico, 26 families control 95% of the wealth. If you're poor, you stay poor.

I don't have an answer, that's why I asked the question. It would mean a lot to me if you kept ranting. It would be glorious. You need to contact the employment office in your community, get a job, and move out of your mother's basement. She wiped her ass on your mouth when she shit you out her ass, I'm almost positive she's ready for you to be gone, but maybe she likes living in shit with you.
