The Atlantic welcomes letters from its readers. Please use the form on the Contact Us page to submit mail for our Letters column or mail your letter to the address above. For your letter to be considered, you must include your phone number and postal address.

I am having trouble printing your pages. What can I do to ensure acceptable printouts?

Articles posted online since January 2001 include a link to a printer-friendly page which formats the page for optimal printing.

For printing earlier pages on our site (pre-2001), we make the following recommendations:

1. Set your browser's print options to "Shrink to fit page." Our pages are formatted for screen width; sometimes older browsers mistakenly print the last few characters of each line on a new page. Allowing your browser to fit the page to your printer's page width will eliminate this problem.

2. For ease of reading onscreen some longer articles are continued on multiple pages. On articles not equipped with the printer-friendly link, it will be necessary to print each of the article's segments in succession in order to print a complete copy.

Which Web browser is recommended for viewing the site?

We suggest using the most advanced browser supported by your computer and operating system. Recent browsers such as Internet Explorer 7 and 8, Google Chrome, Firefox 3, or Safari 3 should have no problems viewing theatlantic.com.

If your browser is not displaying correctly, we recommend that you update your browser, particularly if you are using Internet Explorer 6.  Both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are available to download or upgrade free of charge.

We also recommend that you enable style sheets and JavaScript and we will occasionally use cookies to track your preferences.

Text-only browsers and those optimized for reading aloud to the visually impaired should not have substantial problems, as the site uses primarily text links for navigation.  If you do experience a problem with a text reader on our site, please let us know through our Contact Us page.

The site is wider than my screen, forcing me to scroll horizontally. How can I see it all at once?

Most computers are capable of multiple screen resolutions. Higher resolutions fit more information onto the same monitor, the trade-off being that each pixel is just a bit smaller. We recommend setting your display to a resolution of 1024x768 or higher. This is accomplished via your system's control panel, rather than within the browser.  From the Control Panel select Display, then settings and then you can adjust your screen resolution.

I am having a hard time reading the small text on your site. Can I increase the size of the text?

You can use the menu on your browser to adjust font size.  From the menu bar select "View -> Zoom" or "View -> Make Text Bigger" which will proportionally increase the size of text on any page.

I'm looking for an article that was in a recent issue of The Atlantic and can't find it on your Web site. Aren't all recent articles available on your Web site?

Not all articles in an issue are available every month. We try to put the entire contents of each issue online, but are not always able to obtain electronic rights for every article.

I'm looking for an article that appeared in The Atlantic many years ago. Can I find it on your Web site?

Back issues from November 1995, to the present, are available online free (with the exception of a few articles, the online rights to which are held exclusively by the authors). From November 1857, to November 1995, selected notable articles are available.

In addition, the vast majority of The Atlantic's archive (1857-present) is available via our premium archive. Article summaries are available at no charge, and full articles may be downloaded for a small fee.

Does my print subscription entitle me to free access to The Atlantic's premium archive?

Unfortunately, because our premium archive was created, and is maintained for us, by a third party, there is a charge every time it is accessed.

How do I unsubscribe myself from your e-mail newsletters, or change the e-mail address to which they are sent?

To unsubscribe from one of our newsletters, click this link and follow the instructions. You may also follow the instructions at the bottom of each newsletter.

For an e-mail address change, simply unsubscribe the old address and then subscribe the new one.

Does my print subscription entitle me to free access to the ProQuest premium archive?

Unfortunately, because the ProQuest premium archive was created and is maintained for us by a third party, there is a charge every time it is accessed.

However, we maintain an extensive collection of back issues and other archival material on our own site which is freely available.

I experienced a technical problem while attempting to view one of the ProQuest premium archive pages. Whom should I contact?

The premium archive was created and is maintained for us by a third party, ProQuest Archiver. Your first step should be to visit their extensive Frequently Asked Questions Page. If your question is not answered there, please visit the MyPQA site to log in and send them your query. As The Atlantic's staff is not involved in the archive's technical function or billing, we are unable to assist with technical problems or refunds.

How do I submit a manuscript to The Atlantic? May I send my submission to the magazine via e-mail?

We regret that we cannot accept submissions via e-mail. However, if you would like to submit your manuscript following the guidelines provided below, we would be happy to consider it for publication:

The Atlanticis always interested in poetry, fiction, and articles of the highest quality. A general familiarity with what we have published in the past is the best guide to our needs and preferences. Simply send your manuscript--typewritten, double-spaced--to the address below. Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged if accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. Manuscripts will not be returned. Thank you for your interest.

Poetry Guidelines: The editors of The Atlantic read with interest and attention every poem submitted to the magazine and, quite simply, we publish those that seem to us to be the best. Our interest is in the broadest possible range of work: traditional forms and free verse, the meditative lyric and the "light" or comic poem, the work of the famous and the work of the unknown. We have long been committed to the discovery of new poets. Our one limitation is length; we are unable to publish very long poems, and authors should consult back issues of the magazine for precedents.

Poetry submission guidelines are as follows: Send a typewritten group of no more than six unpublished poems to the attention of David Barber, Poetry Editor, and include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage for return of the manuscript. Contributors living outside the United States should include international reply coupons. We will not consider simultaneous submissions or poems that have been previously published, even in small, private editions. We'll respond in four to six weeks and will pay upon acceptance. Copyright returns to the author after publication. We do not accept poetry submissions via email or fax.
