Which one is she?

Canada’s PM sets May 2 election

Harper spoke after visiting Governor General David Johnston — the representative of Queen Elizabeth, Canada’s head of state — to seek the dissolution of Parliament.

The Head of State of Canada is Queen Elizabeth II, not Queen Elizabeth.

Peanut allergy stirs controversy at Florida school

Attempts to teach the girl’s parents for comment on Monday were unsuccessful.

Radiation anxiety grows in disaster-struck Japan

By Shinichi Saoshiro and Kiyoshi Takenaka

TOKYO, March 22 (Reuters) – Global anxiety rose over radiation from Japan’s crippled nuclear plant even as engineers won ground in their battle to avert disaster from the world’s worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl.

This was the best overall piece I have seen anywhere on the situation, incorporating important items posted in the news elsewhere that I had seen, to give a sense of what is really true and what is rumour.

Offensive headline?

Photo

Felix Salmon’s blog is a low for Reuters.

I have no problem with his point or content – that is his choice to make.  But your choice to allow a sensationalized title, “Don’t Donate Money to Japan” is cheap attention grabbing at its best.

Myself and my coworkers who just saw this are going to go elsewhere for our news and opinions.

COMMENT

I wonder how many people saw the headline, but didn’t read the actual posting.

Inappropriate ad?

Photo

You have a sexual advertisement with a blond sexy woman prefacing Japan’s news video 3/14.

Definitely inappropriate. Please remove asap.

Singular or plural?

COMMENT

—Usage note
Data is a plural of datum, which is originally a Latin noun meaning “something given.” Today, data is used in English both as a plural noun meaning “facts or pieces of information” ( These data are described more fully elsewhere ) and as a singular mass noun meaning “information”: Not much data is available on flood control in Brazil.

Offensive photo?

Photo

This picture is offensive and should be removed. It shows humanity at one of its weakest points. Imagine yourself in this youth’s position, regardless of opinion.

I am appalled that someone chose it as the front cover of the slideshow. We should be ashamed as humans beings, for treating people in this manner.

We can do better.

COMMENT

The saddest part is that it wasn’t followed up with a full expose of the crimes committed by the Libyan Rebels. As a propagandist website supporting the anti-Gadaffi uprising, Rueters seems unable to report the war crimes committed by rebels, treatment of journalists by rebels or the fact that the rebels don’t have popular support. They trawl through hundreds of subjects until they find one, anonymous anti-Gadaffi voice and report it as a factual representation of public sentiment.

Not what happened…

Wisconsin Senate passes public-sector union ban

Madison, Wis., March 9 (Reuters) – Republicans in the Wisconsin Senate on Wednesday side-stepped a boycott by opposition Democrats and approved curbs on union powers in a case closely watched by Americans as a test of labor rights.

Your article published March 9 is titled “Wisconsin Senate passes public-sector union ban.”

The whole headline is a lie. The bill from Wisconsin Governor Walker does not ban one public sector union.

COMMENT

This reminds me of something that I experienced when I was a JO major (subsequently repented and corrected by changing to Business).

Do headline writers ever actually read the story, are they simply perverse, all of the above, none of the above, what?

A Stern warning…

Stern Advice: Tax breaks for the Sandwich Generation

– Work with your siblings to help Mom. Unlike your child, your aging parent doesn’t have to live with you to qualify as a dependent. If she is in a nursing home or assisted living facility and you provide more than half of her support, she’s a dependent. You don’t even have to do it all by yourself — all of the money that you and your siblings put in together can be counted as one.

This is incorrect, in that your child does NOT have to live with you to qualify as a dependent.

An adult child who earns less than $3,650 will qualify as a Qualifying Relative, and thus a dependent, even if he/she does NOT live with you, as long as you provide over half of his/her support.

Hold the anchovies?

Millions of dead anchovies swamp L.A.-area marina

“The issue now is cleanup because we have tons and tons of dead fish rotting and purifying, which obviously creates hazardous material,” Keenan said.

They’re PUTREFYING, not PURIFYING. The ‘t’ makes an enormous difference. Otherwise a good story.
