Mining YouTube for Great Videos

Tuesday February 1, 2011

youtubeHonestly, I find YouTube overwhelming.

There are millions of great videos on the site, but there are many millions more that are awful. So how do you find the gems in the midst of so much rocky content?

As with any mining expedition, it helps to have a map. This Guide to Watching YouTube explains how the site is organized and how you can use categories, groups and channels to find videos that appeal to your personal taste.

Use it well and you'll have a richer YouTube experience.

HyperEngine AV is Fun But Unfulfilling

Thursday January 27, 2011

hyperengineIn a lot of ways HyperEngine AV is like a fun guy or girl you'd go out with a few times but never commit to.

The free video editing software defies preconceptions, and requires an open mind to be fully appreciated.  It has a unique interface that offers complete freedom to manipulate your media, and let's you try things you've never done before while editing.

In the end, though, you can't depend on HyperEngine AV.  The program is all surface, and when you try to explore the complexities of video editing it just freezes up and crashes.

Compression Headache? Try Vid.ly

Tuesday January 25, 2011

vidlyHave you ever heard of a compression headache?

It's the pain you experience when struggling with new codecs and video compression settings.  Every device demands a different type of file, with a different video format or frame rate.  It's enough to make my head throb.

Vid.ly, though, may just be the aspirin that I need.  The site promises to compress your uploads so that they're optimized for any screen.  You get a single URL for sharing the video, and Vid.ly serves up the right format every time.

The service is still in Beta, by invitation only.  It's free for now, so get your hands on it if you can!
