Move over, ladies! Plastic surgery is not just for those with double X chromosomes! More and more men - and not just the metrosexual ones - are signing up for cosmetic procedures, both surgical and minimally-invasive. Men are turning to plastic surgery to feel better, look younger, and even help with their careers.

Overall male cosmetic surgery procedures rose two percent in 2010 compared to 2009. However, many male surgical procedures increased significantly. Facelifts for men rose 14 percent in 2010 while male liposuction increased 7 percent. The most popular procedures for men in 2010 were as follows:

A New Cure for Stretch Marks? Or a Scam?

Recently on the radio, I heard an ad about a new cure for stretch marks called CELTRIXA. The radio ad in the Los Angeles area stated, "The first one hundred callers are guaranteed a risk free trial."

"Wow, I can't believe they're giving this away for free," I thought.

The ad continued, "The results are so impressive, women who've tried it say it's life changing." The ad sounded so convincing, I decided to call the number, knowing full well that something smelled fishy about this offer.

The first red flag I encountered was a request for $6.95 for shipping and handling. This was not mentioned in the ad. To me, "free" should mean "free." This shipping and handling fee would require giving my credit care information over the phone. I immediately hung up. I then researched the internet about this miracle drug and found that my instincts were correct.

There are many things we want our children to become, but being the youngest person to touch a breast implant is likely not one of them. And yes, this sentiment is coming from a plastic surgeon! Unless you live in Henrico, Virginia and your child attended Career Day at Shady Grove Elementary school on April 1st, you have nothing to worry about.

Career Day took on a whole new meaning at Shady Grove Elementary School in Henrico, Virginia earlier this month. A plastic surgeon included a silicone breast implant as part of a presentation about plastic surgery. The children were allowed to touch the implant. Read More...

Booming Business of Breast Boosting

Sunday April 3, 2011

What recession? Plastic surgery procedures are booming! It appears as if plastic surgery is rebounding along with the recovering economy.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) had released the 2010 data for plastic surgery procedures. Over all, doctors performed 13.1 million cosmetic procedures in 2010, an increase of five percent compared to 2009. That includes 11.6 million minimally invasive procedures and 1.6 million cosmetic operations.

Breast enhancement, through breast lift (also known as mastopexy) and breast augmentation (also known as augmentation mammaplasty), remains a high priority for women. In 2010, surgeons performed 296,203 breast augmentations. This is a two percent increase from 2009 and a 39 percent increase from 2000. As for mastopexy, 89,931 were performed in 2010, up three percent since 2009 and 70 percent since 2000.

Breast enhancement, whether with implants, autologous fat transfer, or mastopexy seems to evoke very strong opinions, both for and against it. There are those who feel that women should be happy as they are and there is no need for any type of breast enhancement. Others believe that women should do whatever gives them confidence and allows them to proceed more happily through life. What are your thoughts?

It will be interesting to see if the newly discovered possible link between anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) of the breast and breast implants will affect the number of breast augmentations done in the future.
