Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is a potential side effect of the prostate cancer therapy that often causes much anxiety in men faced with making a decision about which treatment option to choose.
Traditional prostate surgery is associated with a sizable risk of erectile dysfunction following the operation. The "nerve-sparing" prostatectomy was developed with the hope that the percentage of men who experience erectile dysfunction following surgery could be significantly lowered.

Rudy Clay, the mayor of Gary, Indiana announced recently that he will not seek re-election due to his battle with prostate cancer.
Clay, 75, has been mayor of Gary since 2006 and had stated his intention to run for re-election as recently as January 2011.
His recent decision not to run was triggered by a recommendation from his doctor that he try to avoid the more highly demanding aspects of his job as mayor.

Well known men's college basketball coach, Steve Lavin, recently announced that he has prostate cancer.
Lavin issued a statement that he was diagnosed in September 2010 with "low-grade" prostate cancer for which he would delay treatment until after the finish of the college basketball season. Lavin did not say which type of treatment he will undergo now that the season has ended.
Lavin, 46, is currently the coach of St. John's University and led the team to its first NCAA tournament berth since 2002. He was formerly the coach at UCLA and also spent 7 years as an analyst at ESPN.
