The Vaqueros (1-2) lost four of six singles sets against Occidental (1-0). The Tigers, a Division III squad in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, won a pair of tiebreakers in singles to give them a 4-2 lead entering doubles competition.
Sarkissian and Campbell, a Burroughs High graduate and former All-Area honoree, each won their respective singles sets. Sarkissian posted a 6-0, 6-1 win against Stefan Pastor, while Campbell came through with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Jeremy Shapiro. Sarkissian and Campbell then worked together for an 8-4 victory.
Campbell said he consistently attacked the net throughout his singles win.
"It was successful and that's how I got most of my points," Campbell said. "I'm happy with my start.
"It's just about getting confidence and Alex and I are trying to practice our volleys. He's got some great serves."
The Tigers, who won a pair of meetings last season against the Vaqueros, got a singles win apiece from Stephen Perkins, Kevin Siebs, Spencer Choy and Jordan Brown. Perkins picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Hoover graduate Andre Ratavousian, while Siebs netted a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Crescenta Valley graduate Dro Mahmoudi.
Choy topped Stephan Mamann, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. Brown defeated La Cañada graduate Grayson Frazier, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.
"These team were even in terms of ability," said Occidental Coach Michael Guice, whose team clinched the match when Siebs and David Cotton recorded an 8-3 doubles win against Mamann and Crescenta Valley graduate Eric Khanlarian. "Both teams played well and they gave us a better match.
"Both of those tiebreakers were close and we were able to pull it out."
Perkins and Choy registered an 8-5 win against Frazier and Glendale High graduate Mike Astorian.
