The Casablanca Call for Democracy and Human Rights

We, the signatories to this call, as politicians, intellectuals and civil society advocates, believe that the achievement of democracy and the embodiment of human rights in the Arab world is an absolute necessity and requires a broader engagement of all citizens and political and social forces. We observe, with great concern, the dramatic and alarming backsliding of political reforms in the Arab world, due to several structural obstacles since the beginning of the new century. We hereby appeal to all parties concerned with the future of democracy - governments, civil society institutions, political organizations, trade unions, and the media - in the belief that the achievement of real and effective reforms is the responsibility of all parties.

We affirm that confronting the various obstacles that continue to prevent the achievement of a peaceful transfer of power requires the following:

The Future of Democracy and Human Rights in the Arab World

CSID organized a conference in Casablanca, Morocco entitled "The Future of Democracy and Human Rights in the Arab World" on Oct. 22-23, 2010 in partnership with the Centre MADA.The choice of the theme proved both important and timely.

In recent years, many observers have come to believe that promoting democracy is no longer a priority for the U.S. administration. Others believe that the movement for democracy is part of an external agenda, that lacks depth and support inside the countries of the MENA region. This initiative is tangible proof of the degree of mobilization among the democratic forces, and it demonstrates that the struggle for democracy is ever present, regardless of the political situation.

Déjà Vu: Waging Culture Wars on Women’s Bodies

The recent passage of the bill banning the burqa in the French Senate and the heated discussion preceding it have brought into relief a time-honored (masculine) practice of waging culture wars on the bodies of women. In this case, the bodies are those of veiled Muslim women serving as ideological sites for passionate French debates about national identity and cultural authenticity.
