The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) oversees U.S. government-funded civilian international broadcasting through both government and non-governmental organizations. Internship opportunities outlined below abound with both our worldwide and region specific broadcasters.

Internships

The Broadcasting Board of Governors offers internships in engineering and public affairs at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. It also participates in the U.S. government-wide Presidential Management Fellows program.

BBG Internships

Eligibility: Current enrollment at an accredited college or university, though exceptions are occasionally made for outstanding high-school students.

Compensation: Voluntary and unpaid.  A transportation stipend is provided. Engineering offers a few paid summer internships to full-time students (U.S. citizens only) with appropriate technical qualifications.

Credit: College credit is available, depending on your school.

Benefits: Provides "real world" experience in a diverse and dynamic international broadcast organization.

Deadline for applications: 6-12 weeks before desired start date; applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Note to international students: Unfortunately, we are unable to assist in the procurement of United States visas.

BBG – Engineering Internships

Are you studying engineering, technology, or business?  The Broadcasting Board of Governors’ Engineering department has individualized internship opportunities in many fields, including:

  • Broadcasting and Internet technology
  • International business planning
  • Project financial analysis
  • Audience and media research
  • Geographic information systems (GIS). 

Note: The BBG’s Engineering department manages transmission, program delivery, and technical support. Engineering internships do not entail any work in the studio with cameras, microphones, etc.

Requirements:  You must have some engineering or technical background, strong analytical/mathematical skills, and the ability to problem-solve.

BBG - Public Affairs Internships

Are you studying public affairs, international relations, or journalism? An internship in the Broadcasting Board of Governors’ (BBG) Public Affairs office is a great opportunity for you to gain “real world” experience in government and news media public affairs.

As a Public Affairs intern, you will be a part of the BBG’s interactions with Congress, federal agencies, the media, and the global community, while developing your skills in public affairs, event planning, communications, and writing.

Duties:

  • Drafting press releases
  • Cooperating and communicating with outside media
  • Event planning
  • Promoting different Broadcasting Board of Governors projects and initiatives

Requirements: You must have excellent writing and communications skills, energy and initiative, and the ability to multi-task.

Presidential Management Fellows Program

The Broadcasting Board of Governors participates in the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program. This prestigious program has been designed to attract outstanding graduate, law, and doctoral-level students to the Federal service. The PMF Program is your passport to a unique and rewarding career experience with the Federal Government. As a PMF with the BBG or any of the BBG entities, you will have an opportunity to use the knowledge you acquired in graduate school in the field of international broadcasting. Related Internships

Many of the BBG entities offer highly competitive internships in number of fields related to international broadcasting, including radio, television, the Internet, and supporting technical and administrative services.

The Voice of America offers internships in engineering, language broadcasts, public affairs, Special English, TV technical studio operations, and TV to Africa. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and should be submitted 6-12 weeks before the desired start date. A transportation stipend is provided.
