Slow Jeddah cleanup stirs anger

JEDDAH: Eleven days after the flood that devastated central Jeddah, criticism is mounting over the lack of action to clean up the city. Although the city authorities say that in addition to 620 of their own staff involved in the cleanup they have contracted an extra 4,080 cleaners, the response on the ground in many of the affected areas, notably Al-Ruwais and Sharafiyah, is “we've seen nothing yet.” Madinah Road is the most important and one of the busiest thoroughfares in Jeddah, connecting the city’s business district to the northern suburbs.

In the past, divorces were infrequent and only happened for fundamental reasons that made married life impossible. It never happened during the early years of marriage, out of fear for the potential damage to the wife’s reputation. For this reason, married life used to continue for several years before it broke down, if at all. In most cases, divorce would only come after 10 years of marriage at least. There is a new trend emerging where divorces occur earlier to the extent that some marriages do not last more than a year!
