True to Long Beach's seafaring roots, one of its main attractions is the retired RMS Queen Mary ocean liner. Since her 1967 retirement, Queen Mary has been moored in Long Beach as a tourist destination, rental facility and accommodation hub wrapped into one. Stories of ghost hauntings have also become a part of Queen Mary's legacy, anchoring the city's ties to the sea.

Auto racing and the arts

The Long Beach Grand Prix in April is the single largest sporting event in town. It started in 1975 as a Formula 5000 race through the downtown streets, and switched to Formula One racing the following year. It became a Champ Car event in 1984, and after the 2008 race, it merged with the Indy Racing League. On the cultural front, the Long Beach Museum of Art occupies the historic 1912 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson house and is located on a magnificent bluff-top site overlooking Long Beach Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The city has its own symphony orchestra, which plays numerous classical and pop music concerts throughout the year, and several resident professional and semiprofessional theater companies.
