'American Idol': Top 20 not performing live on TV in semi-finals

nigel-lythgoe-american-idol-emmys.jpgFOX has announced a ticket giveaway for its first "American Idol" semi-final round and in the process let us know that the first performances by the Top 20 will be taped prior to the nights they actually air.

The giveaway says: "There will be a taping on Friday, February 25, a taping on Monday, February 28th, and the "Live on TV" performance Thursday, March 3rd."

What this means is whichever gender is performing on the "live" Tuesday show will (presumably) tape Friday, Feb. 25, the other gender will tape their show on Monday, Feb. 28. The Thursday, March 3 results show seems to be an actual live show.

It's not a huge surprise that this is happening. As MJ's Big Blog points out, the show didn't start having actual live semi-final shows until seasons 8 and 9, which is coincidentally when Nigel Lythgoe left the show. Now that he is back, he won't have any of those shenanigans where the show runs super-long from being live on TV.

What do you think, "Idol" fans? Disappointed? We kind of like the live show shenanigans. But on the other hand, maybe this is to ease Steven Tyler into live TV, where he can't just blurt out "f*** a duck and see what hatches."

I personally like Tylers f**k a duck and his other little slips, keeps the show fun. Otherwise it would put everyone to sleep now that we no longer wait to hear how Cowell is going to slice and dice the contestants.

I understand the concerns about ST's vibrant loose cannon personality and look forward to his candidness, but I feel that this takes away the organic feel of live performances and may only allow for post-production to make competitiors seem better than they might really be. I think it would be better if the network just employ a small panel of censors just in case ST does drop an expletive here or there, but think that he's enough of a pro to keep himself mostly in check.

That is so far my favorite line of the season. I admit I wasn't going to watch this season because I am not a big fan or JLo or Steven Tyler but Steven has been pretty darn funny.

Wait a minute!!! I thought that they weren't going to have a Top 20 this year, and that they were going straight to the Top 12 after the Hollywood rounds!!! Did TPTB at Idol changed their minds about that, or did I just dreamed about that? WTH, Y'ALL?!?!?!?

Who cares! This will be the last season of the show anyway

Dream on B. No matter how much you'd like to see it go it is still by far the top rated show on TV. It makes even more money than the high rated scripted shows. If Fox dropped it the ohter 4 networks would break their legs running to pick it up.
