Even as Silicon Valley is gripped by a frenzy over fast-growing consumer Web companies such as Facebook Inc. and Zynga Inc., a closely watched report on the region Monday found that the technology ferment hasn't spurred a broad recovery.
In the Index of Silicon Valley—which covers the region's economic indicators and is compiled by nonprofits Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation—the groups said that the Silicon Valley economy has become increasingly bifurcated in the past year. While the tech industry is growing, that hasn't translated into widespread employment gains, with much of the improvement undermined by factors such as a municipal funding crisis.
