Homelessness is a woman’s issue. Homelessness in our community is often misunderstood due to the lack of visibility of homeless women and their children on city streets. Unlike many homeless single men, you will not see them panhandling with their children. Instead, they are “couch surfing” at friends’ or families’ residences or living in cars and shelters, in an effort to keep themselves and their children safe and warm. (T&G;)
The costs of providing health care to municipal retirees have been building, largely out of public view, for many years. A report issued this week by the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation has finally brought the issue into the open — and estimated the total liabilities for cities and towns in Massachusetts at about $20 billion.
