Last year I was visiting Nags Head, NC when a plastic bag ban went into effect for the Outer Banks...because of the geographic proximity of the bay and the ocean. The grocery stores offered handled brown paper bags for a nickle each at checkout.

So I picked up a large canvas tote bag. It was no big deal at all. In fact, I adopted the same habit when I came home. The canvas bag holds more, doesn't break, doesn't roll around in the back of the car, and stands up by itself.
Though I don't think there should be a national ban, I would like to see the bags end up in recycling bins at the supermarket, or re-used, per Mr. Borsher. I hate seeing them tangled up in tree branches.

I agree, canvas/cloth bags are better. I much prefer carrying them, than plastic or paper. Don't break, much stronger handles, stand up on their own fairly well, and you don't have a bunch of stuff to dispose of (or recycle) when you're finished. I just toss them back into the truck, ready for the next round.

Canvas totes are so much better for carrying everything you care to and are better for the environment. I purchased my first canvas grocery bag in the early 80s and I'm still using it Since then I have added seven more that I picked up in thrift stores. I don't particularly like totes with advertisements printed on them but if I can pick one up for a buck and it lasts ten years, I am way ahead of the game. Also the use of plastic garbage bags could be cut significantly if more folks would compost all the kitchen waste that can be composted. Most of what you have left is paper and it can be recycled.
