Jerkin' didn't die, it just mutated. One year after the Southern California teen dance craze was the recipient of national attention, its flagship artists continue to make waves -- albeit in different permutations. While the New Boyz prepare to drop their sophomore Asylum release in September, Def Jam-signed YG has been burning up local airwaves all summer with his hit single, "Toot It and Boot It."

Currently at No. 4 on Power 106's play list, the ode to, um, "tooting it and booting it" is getting played approximately once an hour on the region's largest hip-hop station. Nor is it alone, with the Cali Swag District's "Teach Me How to Dougie" getting a similarly prodigious number of spins. Of course, neither is technically a jerkin' song, but both share the sub-genre's sparse minimalism, heavy low-end and wide open space to perform all sorts of acrobatic dance moves. Even the massive "Beamer, Benz or Bentley," from New York-bred Lloyd Banks, bears the signs of jerkin's influence.

"Toot it and Boot It" boasts the most R&B;/pop influence of the bunch, and its video makes no secret of its mainstream intentions. If you think you've seen this before, it's because you have: There's the posse shot in front of expensive cars, the dancing girls in the rain, the swimming pools, the goofy white guys in ties dancing. Yet despite its overt and practically absurdist misogyny, there's something hopelessly endearing about the track. The highest charting local tune on Power's play list, it's insanely catchy and a worthy entrant in the running for the summer jam sweepstakes. At least it doesn't steal the melody to "Tik Tok."
