Frugal Fashion: Camilla Belle in winter white at the Hollywood Style Awards

LdcxswncAll year we watch enviously
as celebrities parade down red carpets in gorgeous and sometimes outrageous gowns. Awards shows and movie premieres give us a close-up look at designer collections as actresses bring their A-game. And since Hollywood glamour is all about presenting your best self, why not have an entire awards show devoted to those who do it best?

It seems there really is an awards show for everything, and there's no exception when it comes to style. The entertainment industry’s fashion elite gathered Sunday at the Hammer Museum for the Hollywood Style Awards. Instead of pops of color or even black, Hollywood stylemakers started a new trend of snowy white tones on the red carpet.  Maybe the unseasonably warm temperatures prompted the actresses to create their own white winter. Whatever the reason, they put the “don’t wear white after Labor Day” rule to shame.

Kate Bosworth covered up in a casual white tee and pale green floor-length skirt, and "Glee’s" Lea Michele went for a white patterned strapless dress, but the belle of the night was none other than actress Camilla Belle.

Belle looked perfectly chic in a curve-hugging Kimberly Ovitz architectural ivory dress with a pleated high-necked collar and cinched waist. She paired the structured dress with black satin Stuart Weitzman heels, an ivory-colored Maia N clutch and white gold jewelry by Cartier. Check out more photos from the awards.

Our frugal alternatives are winter white chic, and because we have your holiday shopping budget in mind, they're under $100.

Have an outfit you're dying to buy but need a frugal alternative? E-mail us a picture. We're up for the challenge.

On my mind: Wallis Simpson's style

Wallis
I saw "The King's Speech" last week, about the reluctant rise to the British throne of Prince Albert, who suffered from a speech defect. It's a terrific film, and wonderful to look at, too.

Costume designer Jenny Beavan's (who also worked on the awesome "Sherlock Holmes" last year) flawless bespoke suits for Prince Albert (Colin Firth) are a nice contrast to the rumpled tweeds worn by his speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) is outfitted in charming, softly colored 1930s-style tie-front blouses, long skirts, fur-trimmed coats and feathered hats.

But the character who really piqued my fashion interest was Wallis Simpson, the controversial American divorcee who captures the heart of Albert's brother Edward, and costs him the throne.

PantherSimpson appears only briefly in the film, but makes quite an impression, dressed for a dinner party at Balmoral in a black, off-the-shoulder gown and a long necklace with a tassel pendant worn over her exposed back.

Love her or hate her, Simpson was a fashion plate (Mainbocher was her couturier of choice), and a serious jewelry collector (or receiver--Edward showered her with millions of dollars worth of jewels over her lifetime).

At an auction of some of those jewels at Sotheby's on Tuesday, her famous diamond Cartier panther bracelet fetched nearly $7 million, the most ever paid at auction for a bracelet.

Rumor has it that Madonna bought the piece, which would make sense. She's directing "WE" (after Wallis and Edward), a film about the love affair due out next year. I can't wait to see what costume designer Arianne Phillips is cooking up for that.

Rodeo Drive Walk of Style honors Grace Kelly and Cartier

Last night Cartier became the first jewelry company to receive the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style award, joining the company of previous recipients Armani, Valentino and Tom Ford for Gucci. The late Grace Kelly, princess of Monaco, was also honored for her style and support of the arts.  IMG_0586

The awards ceremony, held outdoors on Rodeo Drive just north of Wilshire, was more intimate than in years past, when Gloria Gaynor sang during the Tom Ford fete and Kanye West hit the stage for Ferragamo. But this year's elegant and subdued setting was far more fitting for Kelly and Cartier.

Demi Moore presented the award to Cartier, citing her most prized possession from the French jeweler -- her engagement ring. The bevy of baubles Moore wore last night, including white gold, diamond and onyx hoops, three white gold and diamond link bracelets, twi white gold and diamond Laniere bracelets and a diamond pave ring, weren't so bad either. In fact, her sparkling wrists gleamed all the way to the back of the crowd.

IMG_0593 Prince Albert II of Monaco accepted the award on his mother's behalf after a couple of video montages of famous movie scenes featuring Cartier pieces and a look at Kelly's life as an actress and princess.

Following the refreshingly quick awards ceremony, guests walked (yes, walked) directly across the street to Blvd restaurant at the Regent Beverly Wilshire hotel. The crowd, with many women wearing Cartier's signature deep red hue, snacked on shrimp tempura and signed their names on bid sheets at the silent auction table.

Despite all the glitz and cocktail frocks, the most interesting (and unexpected) style statement was made by columnist George Christy, who was perched on a couch wearing a striped shirt, blazer, fedora and beaded moccasins.  He completed his look with a fragrant gardenia stuffed into his pocket in lieu of a pocket square.

Camilla Belle was another stylish guest, in a white feathered dress and a smattering of sparkling Cartier jewels that made her look elegant and polished, like a modern princess.

Princess Grace, Cartier to get the royal treatment on Rodeo's Walk of Style

PAR308298 The Rodeo Drive Walk of Style is apparently expanding the universe of "style legends" it plans to honor on the famed shopping street, adding movie stars and jewelry labels to the ranks of designers, photographers and costume designers when the late Princess Grace of Monaco and French jeweler Cartier are immortalized with permanent plaques placed on the sidewalk of the retail row Oct. 22.

As Grace Kelly, the future princess starred in a handful of movies including Hitchcock films "To Catch a Thief," "Rear Window," and "Dial M for Murder," and won the 1955 Academy Award for best actress in a leading role for "Country Girl."

She met Prince Rainier III of Monaco on a 1955 visit to the principality, and married him the next year, living in Monaco until her death in a 1982 auto accident.

Cartier, which dates to 1847 and recently marked the 100th anniversary of its arrival in the United States, has quite a track record with royal families. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) dubbed the jewelry house "Jeweller of kings and king of jewellers," issuing a royal warrant marking the firm as supplier to the king. Numerous other royal families followed suit --  including the Principality of Monaco in 1920.

But the connection is more personal than that. When they became formally engaged in January 1956, Prince Rainier III presented Grace Kelly with a platinum Cartier ring set with a 10.47-carat, emerald-cut diamond, which she wore in her final film "High Society."

His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco is slated to accept the award on behalf of his mother at the evening ceremony, which will benefit the Princess Grace Foundation-USA and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, and takes place at an as-of-yet undisclosed Beverly Hills location the day after the Princess Grace Foundation-USA's annual awards gala fundraiser at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.

Started in 2003, previous recipients of the Walk of Style Award include designers Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford, Salvatore Ferragamo, Gianni and Donatella Versace, James Galanos and Manolo Blahnik, photographers Herb Ritts and Mario Testino, and costume designers Edith Head, James Acheson and Milena Canonero. The most recent recipient was designer Valentino Garavani, who was honored in April 2009.

Cartier Celebrates 100 Years in America with eye-catching exhibit

Cartier Party Shines in Beverly Hills

Ageneral_Donat_57597654_Max
The Cartier boutique in Beverly Hills sparkled last night in celebration of the brand’s 100 years in the United States. Usher, Diane Keaton, Bobby Shriver and Frédéric de Narp, president and chief executive of Cartier North America, mingled with guests while perusing the exhibition.

Upstairs, walls were lined with images from "Cartier I Love You," a book by Bruce Weber that captures the history of Cartier through archival photos, collages and illustrations.  Proceeds from the sale of the book benefit ServiceNation nonprofit coalition.
